Remember all those old console and handheld games that are still in your mom’s attic? The ones you couldn’t stand to throw out, in hopes that one day an answer to your nostalgic gaming needs would bring these titles back like a Phoenix from the ashes. Today, is your lucky day…at least in Japan.
A new console from an Asian company called Cyber Gadget aims to bring back all of your favorite games from a variety of formats. All told, over 11 different gaming platforms will be supported and the list includes all the favorites…
The Retro Freak console will support game cartridges from Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES), Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, Mega Drive, Genesis, PC Engine, TurboGrafx-16, Famicom, Super Famicom and PC Engine SuperGrafx. It’s an impressive feat bringing all these formats together in one console. The games are inserted on the top and front of a plastic white box, much like other consoles from the 80’s and 90’s. It will support various USB controllers, including PS3/4 plus the ability to use retro gamepads via an extra adapter.
A smaller white box does most of the intensive graphic work before the games get sent out to the TV. The console has an HDMI output and can be set to handle a variety of different resolutions. Cyber Gadget has even built-in different settings to smooth and enhance the visuals of older games, which is a nice addition.
At this point, Retro Freak is only available in Japan. So potential availability is unclear here in the States, although we’d venture to guess that there would be a very strong market in America. In the meantime, there are plenty of options available on eBay for those of you looking to bring back some of the old classics.
