Eyefi announces Wi-Fi support for GoPro and Olympus cameras plus new cloud storage pricing

Popular camera accessory maker Eyefi has been feeling the need to evolve lately as camera manufacturers have increased the number of models that include built-in Wi-Fi to transfer photos. The very feature that defines Eyefi’s line of Mobi SD cards.

Today, Eyefi has answered the call with new integration for Olympus and GoPro cameras that enables users to skip the included software and transfer photos directly to Eyefi’s ecosystem. Its cloud platform and dashboard were also recipients of a refresh, including a new price point on unlimited monthly storage. We have the full details below.

Essentially, Eyefi is still carrying out the same features that it always has. Instead of requiring one of its SD cards to transfer photos, the Eyefi Mobi app accesses the camera’s Wi-Fi functionality to transfer photos as needed. Tapping directly into the hardware is a smart move by Eyefi, taking a proactive approach as more manufacturers will undoubtedly include Wi-Fi in upcoming models.

Photographers will need to either have a subscription to Eyefi Cloud or elect for a one-time $4.99 in-app purchase. A new price point was also announced for unlimited storage in the cloud, which will cost users $4.99/month. Whichever route users elect to take will enable Wi-Fi photo transfers from GoPro HERO+ LCD, HERO3, HERO4 or Olympus Stylus 1, PEN E-P5, Stylus TG860 and OM-D E-M5 Mark II cameras. Wi-Fi camera connectivity can be accessed on Android devices today, with iOS support coming later this year. Eyefi notes that they are currently working on the ability to transfer video from GoPro’s HERO cameras, but at this time is limited to transferring low resolution videos to desktop computers.

Eyefi also updated its dashboard with new “cloud smart tags” that analyzes photos and identifies different subjects and people, organizing them along the way. A new feature called Discover enables searching and sorting based on EXIF data produced by the camera. This will allow photographers to analyze data produced by the camera to see when a particular setting is generally used or an ISO speed is typically required.

There is no doubt that Eyefi is taking an aggressive approach to its cloud service pricing. Although, we’d guess that Google’s new Photos service will provide enough features for most photographers. iOS users have the built-in option of iCloud storage but its unattractive pricing may not be worth it for most. Eyefi’s SD cards alone are an excellent means of wirelessly transferring photos from cameras to iOS devices for those without Wi-Fi enabled cameras. We positively reviewed Eyefi’s latest products earlier this year.

Eyefi Supports WiFi Cameras

Eyefi Mobi apps and Cloud service now work with WiFi enabled cameras from GoPro® and Olympus

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., June 16, 2015 — Eyefi (www.eyefi.com), the global leader in digital photo apps and services, today announced updated offerings that include support for WiFi enabled cameras. With Eyefi’s WiFi camera connectivity, customers who use GoPro and Olympus WiFi cameras don’t have to wait until they get home to upload and share their photos. Photos from those cameras are instantly transferred, automatically organized and beautifully displayed alongside images captured with other cameras, including DLSR cameras with an Eyefi Mobi WiFi SD card, mobile phones and tablets. With Eyefi Cloud Smart Tags, the entire collection of photos is automatically classified by subject area and synced to all devices making it easy to find, enjoy and share vivid memories as soon as they happen.

“No one uses only one device for taking pictures anymore,” said Matt DiMaria, Eyefi CEO. “When it comes to camera gear, today’s photo enthusiast relies on an array of equipment—from WiFi cameras, to DSLRs with an Eyefi Mobi card, to smartphones and tablets. With Eyefi, photos from each camera are instantly transferred and available in a single collection, eliminating tedious, time-consuming manual transfer and consolidation steps and with Eyefi Cloud, photos are made available on every device, instantly.”

Take advantage of intelligent organization

In addition to the ease and convenience of having your photos in a single collection, Eyefi brings a new level of organization to photographers. Smart Tags automatically identify the subject or subjects in each photo, and applies tags automatically. Dozens of tags—such as person, landscape, food and drink—are included, and custom tags can also be created. Smart Tags are completely configurable by the user giving them control over how their images are organized and making them easier to find.

Discover more about your photos

The revolutionary Discover feature is the first and only visualization tool that helps photographers learn more about how they shoot, and how settings and combination of settings affect images. Discover takes camera metadata—such as model, ISO, aperture, and shutter speed—and makes it easy for photographers to analyze their photos. Results are displayed in an informative, graphical format.
