Smart connected devices for our homes are becoming more commonplace, with technology giants like Apple and Samsung leading the way with support for a myriad of devices. Even Amazon has an internet-connected speaker that will control your lights, thermostat and more.
One of the biggest issues with this technology is price. Many consumers are not willing to pay the premium that comes with support for Apple’s HomeKit or other platforms like Z-Wave or Zigbee. Simply put, the deadbolt has worked in its existing state for decades, why upgrade it now?
Kwikset has been leading the charge on smartphone connected locks with its Kevo Bluetooth-enabled product. But for roughly $200, the adoption rate has been slow. Today, the lock maker has released a new deadbolt that drops a number of features but retains its internet connectivity in exchange for a lower price point.
The new Signature Series with Home Connect offers support for Z-Wave connected devices and carries a list price of $150. This deadbolt does not come with any keypads, notification lights or support for Apple’s HomeKit. By comparison, its price tag is roughly 35% less than Schlage’s new Sense Smart deadbolt.
Kwikset has opted to use the Z-Wave radio system to communicate with other devices in your home. That means a hub from SmartThings or Wink will be required for the deadbolt to access the internet. The good news is that there are a wide variety of products that are capable of communicating with this lock.
With a home full of internet connected products, opening your door lock can trigger your lights and other products to turn on. GE, Samsung, and Aeon Labs are amongst the biggest proponents of the Z-Wave medium that currently offer different smart home solutions.
This new release from Kwikset is available today with a $150 list price in round and square designs with a variety of finishes.
