We first heard whispers of Amazon launching a made by hand store back in the spring as the online retail behemoth considered a run at Etsy. Today, Handmade at Amazon has launched with “thousands of unique products” made from more than 60 countries around the world. Each piece of inventory comes from a factory-free environment as every artisan piece is made without the use of automated machinery.
We have the full details on Amazon’s new store, how you can get started selling goods, and our top handmade picks.
Etsy has made a name for itself as the preeminent way to buy and sell handmade goods online. It has largely gone unchallenged since the service was launched just over ten years ago. But Amazon’s status as a retailer and financial resources are likely to threaten Etsy’s place at the top.
Amazon promises an inventory of over 80,000 products that come from approved factory-free artisans. Additionally, 30% of the available products can be personalized to buyers’ specifications. Every product page has an image of the proprietor of each company and an icon denoting the location of origin. This allows customers to sort by state or region if so desired.
At the start, roughly 600 handmade items are Prime eligible with “more being added each day”. Most items have an estimated ship time for 4-8 days depending on location, inventory and level of customization.
Some of our favorite products already available on Handmade at Amazon include this set of personalized automotive-themed stationary, a salvaged-wood cherry end table, and these hand-forged coat hooks. Handmade at Amazon is an excellent alternative to traditional gifts for birthdays, anniversaries and other celebrations. There is even a storefront for Halloween-themed decorations.
Interested in selling your own goods at Amazon? Use this form to apply for an invitation to Handmade. It will be interesting to track the success of this new venture at Amazon. A flat-rate 12% fee applies to sales, which includes marketing, shipping and fraud protection. At this time, there is not a monthly fee associated with the program.
