The best GoPro HERO4 action camera accessories, mounts, storage, more

GoPro has taken the consumer market by storm with its feature-packed action cameras. While choosing the right HERO device is fairly straight forward, it can be frustrating to find the right accessories for your needs. We’ve rounded up the best options for GoPro’s HERO4 Silver and Black cameras below.

Housings

Every GoPro comes with a housing of some kind (either built-in or as an add-on), which provide waterproof protection to a certain point. However, you may find that the included option provides too much or not enough coverage for your activities. In some cases, a skeleton option may be a better choice, especially for capturing audio. Here are some good alternatives:

  • GoPro HERO4/3+/3 Blackout Housing: $45
    • Waterproof to 131-feet
    • Includes Standard, Skeleton and Touch Backdoors
    • Rated 4.6/5 stars

  • CamKix HERO4/3+/3 Skeleton Frame Mount: $17
    • Provides access to all ports
    • Includes a lens cover and mount
    • Rated 4.6/5 stars

  • GoPro HERO4/3+/3 Diving Housing: $50
    • Waterproof to 197-feet
    • Flat Glass Lens
    • Rated 4.4/5 stars

Storage

Officially, GoPro HERO4 action cameras support MicroSD cards up to 64GB although some 128GB may work, with a minimum speed rating of Class 10. A 64GB card will store just over two hours of 4K footage or around four hours in 1080p. GoPro has a handy chart that breaks down the recording times for each setting when using a 64GB card. It’s best practice to always have an extra MicroSD card on hand. Personally, I have an external drive that I carry with me to easily transfer my footage when needed. These are our top picks:

  • SanDisk Ultra Class 10 Ultra MicroSD Card w/ Adapter

  • Transcend Information USB 3.0 Card Reader: $7
    • Supports SDH/XC and MicroSDH/XC
    • USB Powered
    • Rated 4.6/5 stars

Action Mounts

This may be our favorite category of GoPro accessories. There are hundreds of options out there, ranging in price, feature and build quality. GoPro’s line of mounts are a great place to start, although they can be somewhat pricey in comparison to third-party options. You’ll want to grab some 3M stickies to mount your camera just about anywhere. We’ve tried to knock this list down to a few options, but there really is so much out there to discover.

  • SBONY 3-way Grip Stabilizer Mount w/ tripod: $27 or GoPro’s Official Version: $64
    • Folding arm
    • Detachable pole for shortened handle grip, included tripod adapter
    • Rated 4.6/5 stars

  • GoPole 14-24″ Floating Extension Pole for GoPro Cameras: $47
    • 2-stage Floating and Telescoping Pole
    • Wi-Fi Remote Clip and Wrist Strap
    • Rated 4.2/5 stars

  • GoPro Jaws: Flex Clamp Mount: $35
    • Adjustable Flex Clamp Mount and Neck
    • Removable Neck
    • Rated 4.5/5 stars

Gimbals and Remotes

So you have the camera, mount and you’re all set to record. Well, that perfect footage might look a little wobbly without the right tools. Gimbals are ideal for keeping a steady video. Some are more expensive with extra bells and whistles, while others are simple and still get the job done for most. A remote also comes in handy as well for those tricky shots or selfies.

  • Roxant Pro Video Stabilizer for GoPro: $60

  • Geiyu Tech G4 3-axis Gimbal for GoPro HERO4/3+/3: $226
    • 320-degree pan/tilt and 100-degree roll
    • Accomodates LCD backpack
    • Rated 3.9/5 stars

  • GoPro Smart Remote: $70
    • Complete camera control: record, playback, settings, more
    • Control up to 600-feet away, includes a wrist strap
    • Rated 4.3/5 stars

Power

If there is any area that could use improve on the HERO4, it’s battery life. GoPro states that you can expect between 50-90 minutes per charge depending on your settings. If you prefer to use the built-in touch display on the Silver edition or Wi-Fi and 4K on the Black model, you’ll notice decreased performance. Here are a few products that will make life a little easier:

  • Anker 20,000mAh Dual USB 4.8A External Battery Pack: $40

  • GoPro Battery BacPac: $45
    • Extends battery life by attaching to your camera
    • Compatible with most standard USB chargers
    • Rated 4.7/5 stars

Other

There are a few more accessories that aren’t a necessity, but are going to make your filming experience a whole lot easier. Some of our favorite add-ons include:

  • GoScope Pro Flex Case: $40
    • Store two cameras
    • 12 pockets plus elastic straps, d-rings, pole storage and zipper pockets
    • Rated 4.3/5 stars

  • GoPro Anti-Fog Inserts: $15
    • Prevents fogging of your lens in cold or humid environments
    • Each insert lasts for approximately four uses (12 in a set)
    • Rated 4.5/5 stars

  • PolarPro Aqua Filter 3-pack: $50
    • Red, Magenta and Snorkel filters for color correction
    • Pressure seal fit
    • Rated 4.3/5 stars
