Your music streaming options are nearly endless these days. The same can be said about the speaker market in general. From compact to oversized, Bluetooth or Wi-Fi and nearly everything in between, there’s something for everyone. So how do you re-invent such a crowded category?
The Sugr Cube has an idea. Based around Wi-Fi connectivity and touch controls, this compact square block of wood is loaded up on features. After a successful round of crowdfunding, Sugr is ready to launch to the general public.
From the outside, Sugr Cube doesn’t look like a particularly notable product. The trend of wooden speakers and headphones has been going strong for years. It’s the complete package of features that makes this Cube noteworthy. The control system is particularly unique, as three different movements adjust playback accordingly: a touch on top starts and pauses music and a 45-degree tilt to the right skips forward a track while the same motion to the left skips back. Oddly, volume levels are still controlled by a knob on the back.
Sugr Cube uses Wi-Fi connectivity to bridge the gap between your music collection and the speaker. It is AirPlay compatible for playback via iOS/Mac devices plus it works with Spotify Connect. The iOS and Android Control App provides access to content from a multitude of sources like Pandroa, BBC and others while also controlling EQ levels.
There is 4GB of internal flash storage for playback when an internet connection is not available. The system is capable of handling AAC, MP3, WAV, and FLAC files amongst other formats. Additionally, it has alarm clock functionality and a sleep timer.
There are four finishes available: maple, cherry, black and white. Each speaker is “beautifully crafted” from solid chunks of wood, according to the manufacturer. The built-in 6,000mAh battery provides up to 24 hours of playback on a single charge.
Sugr Cube is available for purchase now for $229 for one speaker or $419 as a pair.
Perhaps you’re in the market for something a bit more affordable? Symphonized’s NXT Solid Wood Bluetooth Speaker is available for $49.99 shipped in two different finishes. It features six hours of playback and has great ratings: 4.5/5 from over 225 Amazon customers. Grab one for yourself or as a nice gift for the holiday season.
