Low-flow shower heads are not a new phenomenon. They’ve been around for some time, with varying degrees of annoyance for many years. The idea of saving water while enjoying a long, hot shower has been discussed and executed in many different ways. A new $3,000 shower that recycles (and purifies) our shower water was announced earlier this month with eyes on “revolutionizing” the industry. The Hamwells e-Shower is iOS-connected and re-uses every drop of water seven times. It’s goal is to significantly reduce our water and energy usage. The question is, will consumers buy-in?
Hamwells’ new e-Shower project is an all-in-one solution that collects, purifies and recycles your water. It’s a full-on in-wall unit with a control panel, shower head and basin. The magic happens within the unit where each drop of recycled water is re-conditioned for use. It can provide about 1.5 liters of refreshed water each minute after being filtered and cleansed with UV light. There is a built-in filter that is automatically cleaned each time the shower starts up (by your initial blast of cold water) and stops any unwanted materials from being reused.
The large control panel runs from the basin up to the shower head and provides a touch screen menu system. From there, users can elect to only use water one time (the traditional approach) or recycle it. When the system is activated, a plug is automatically placed over the drain and water is collected. The panel also provides access to water temperature and offers control of the built-in sound system.

Hamwells calculates that the average homeowner will be able to recoup their costs in about 19 months. There is an online calculator for estimating total cost for each individual’s scenario. One of the biggest areas that Hamwells looks to cut costs is the amount of energy required to heat the water for a shower. It calculates that energy use is significantly more expensive than water itself. All told, Hamwells estimates savings to be upward of “80% on energy and 90% on water”.
Additional features include iOS-connectivity, which allows users to start the shower, set temperature, track savings and control music playback. The Hamwells e-Shower will launch with a roughly $3,000 price tag. It is currently available for pre-order now and is set to ship in June. In the meantime, there are DIY options for saving money on your showers. This option from Delta is highly-rated and can save roughly “36% of your water usage” per shower.
