Here you thought that we were past all the selfie stick madness. I know that I was hoping for a less is more approach to 2016. It looks like we won’t be so fortunate. Meet ROAM-e, the drone and selfie stick mashup coming to an amusement park near you…
ROAM-e is positioned as a flying selfie stick, not a drone with selfie capabilities. However, it would be easy to blur the lines with this product. The main goal of its creator, the IoT Group, is to extend the capabilities of a traditional selfie stick to the sky. Instead of being limited to the length of your pole (sorry), ROAM-e allows users to capture a larger picture of your location. In fact, it will automatically follow you at a distance up to 82-feet away or as close as 10-feet. Either way, that’s an improvement over a regular selfie stick.
The camera is capable of taking 5MP still images thanks to its CMOS sensor and Quad-Cpre ARM Cortex A7 processor. You can also live stream video for up to 20 minutes on a single charge. It has built-in facial recognition so it can identify your movements and follow accordingly. The base rotates 360-degrees so you can take sweeping panoramic footage, if you’d like. iOS and Android connectivity is used to keep tabs on the device and ensure that it doesn’t fly too far away.

In terms of the build, ROAM-e is comparable in size to a standard water bottle. The rotors can be collapsed and folded for storing on the go. Unlike DJI’s Phantom drones, which ship with special carrying cases, this product is meant to be more of a throw in your bag and go.
The most natural comparison for ROAM-e is the Lily Camera, which launched about a year ago. Although they may be viewed as competitors, each model offers a different set of specifications and price. The IoT Group is now accepting pre-orders with a list price of $349.
In the meantime, there are cheaper alternatives to ROAM-e that’ll help with your drone and selfie fix. We’re big fans of this little quadcopters that come in a variety of colors and cost less than a nice meal. As far as selfie sticks go, give this best-selling Bluetooth option from Anker a try.
