Garmin goes classy with its new smartphone-connected vívomove fitness tracker

This morning, Garmin announced a new addition to its line of popular fitness trackers. The vívomove is unlike its siblings in that it sports a much more traditional design. There would be no fault in confusing it with a normal analog watch. Garmin is hoping to appeal to a whole different subset of potential users with this classic look. With prices starting at $149, vívomove has the potential to be a hot item this Christmas.

At its core, vívomove is a traditional watch with all the typical functions you’d expect. It comes in black, white, rose gold, gold, and silver with silicone and leather band options for each color. There have been plenty of fitness tracker releases lately that focus on watch-like designs (see Huawei, Apple, others) but this is a first for Garmin.

The fitness aspect of the watch is handled by two curved bars that can be found on either side of the face. A black meter fills as more activity occurs during the day. On the opposite end, the red bar shows how long you’ve been inactive. This is one of the more simple means of communication that we’ve seen in a fitness tracker.

Garmin is marketing vívomove as an “all-day” device, it’s designed to record your movement throughout the day and sleep cycles at night. It stores all of this data via Garmin’s Connect system for iOS and Android. A one-year battery is a key piece to the puzzle and standout feature that differentiates vívomove from the competition. It’s a welcome spec for a device that’s being billed as a 24-hour wearable.

The Garmin vívomove is now available for purchase from Amazon with prices starting at $149.99 for the Sport model. It ships with a leather band on the Classic Edition for $199.99, while the Premium brings a gold casing for $299.99.

The watch face features two bars that allow users to view step progress and inactivity at a glance. The bar on the left side of the face shows the progress toward a user’s personalized daily step goal. The red bar on the right side of the watch face reminds users when they’ve been inactive too long, filling half way after one hour of inactivity and building with every 15 minutes after that until its reset by walking for a couple of minutes. The vívomove also tracks how well users slept by monitoring movement and restlessness.

Throughout the day, the vívomove automatically syncs with the Garmin Connect Mobile app, a free online fitness community where users can track workouts, sleep patterns and trends, join online challenges to compete against friends and earn virtual badges. They can also receive Garmin Connect Insights, smart wellness insights personalized to each user that provide cues to help them reach goals, shout-outs when milestones have been met and relevant healthy tips from experts.
