Drones have soared in popularity over the last twelve months thanks to easy-to-fly designs and ever lowering prices. While it’s natural to consider above-ground photography as the hottest trend, a company by the name of Seawolf has another idea.
Its latest creation is a submarine that uses your GoPro to capture the action while beaming a live-view to your Samsung Gear VR headset. Just imagine cruising through the ocean (or that pond at the golf course) and seeing the footage in first person…
The new Seawolf VR360 is still in the developmental stages but we are learning more about its features today. This is the latest addition to a line of underwater subs that are made with content creation in mind. Although it weighs in at twenty-pounds, the overall size appears to be fairly compact for a product like this. It has a tube-like design with a motor in the rear and space for your GoPro up front. A thin arm extends up a few feet and holds a Luna camera, providing live footage of your excursion.
A handheld remote provides direction for the rig as you navigate the waters. Live footage is beamed to your VR headset (Samsung Gear, in this instance), giving users an up close look at what is being captured. The Luna camera is capable of shooting in 360-degrees so you can move your head and see all around during a dive.
The interior holds a GoPro HERO4 that is controlled via the included remote. You’ll be able to dive about 80 feet underwater with this model, although there are future releases in the works that will at least double that figure. This Seawolf model is capable of traveling at just over two knots or two mph when fully submerged. It is worth noting that you’ll need to provide your own camera and VR gear to complete this setup.
Final pricing has yet to be announced on this upcoming release. For comparison, the similar Seawolf Sport retails for $999 but isn’t as fully featured. Given the capabilities here and the prices we typically see from DJI with comparable technology, I would guess that $1,400 is not out of the question.
