Finding your way through the airport can be a real pain in the ass. Getting your tickets, passing through security and getting on the plane can all have their own mishaps that cause delays. A company by the name of Olive has a new plan to help remedy this situation. Its new intelligent suitcase can be ridden like a Segway and folds up to look just like a regular carry-on. Even better, it’s loaded with smartphone functionality. More below.
From the outside, Olive’s new suitcase looks like a standard issue bag that you’d see all around the airport. It has two wheels and a handle that extends from the top. In most cases, this is just a regular suitcase. However, with a few simple maneuvers it turns into Segway-like rideable.
It has a self-balancing system that keeps riders upright while cruising along. Built-in accelerometers and gyroscopes keep constant tabs on your movements. Additionally, it has a stereoscope camera on the front that creates a 3D map of sorts to help it avoid traffic. This allows the bag to move independant of its owner throughout a crowded space, as well.
Olive claims that it is the “world’s first” intelligent suitcase. This is manifested in a few different ways. Aside from it’s two-wheeled functionality, it also connects to your smartphone to provide pertinent information when needed. The free app connects via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi and can notify the owner of their bag’s location. It also has an automatic lock/unlock feature if the bag goes unattended.

Final pricing and a release date have yet to be announced by Olive. We’d expect it to fall closer to $1,000 than a few hundred. Either way, it’s exciting to see a new idea in a space that has seen minimal development over the last few decades. In need of some new luggage? Amazon’s best-sellers list is a great place to start. You’ll even find a full page dedicated to carry-on options if you’re in need of something slimmer. Oh, and don’t forget, Timbuk2 has a massive sale going on right now.
