DJI has long owned the consumer drone space as the go-to for high-quality quadcopters. As this category’s popularity has steeply risen over the last few years, we’ve seen more competitors enter this space. The latest of which is the Teal Drone. Its new production model sports some of the fastest consumer-grade speeds that we’ve seen, promising to hit 70MPH. For comparison, the new Phantom 4 tops out at just over 45MPH in its sport mode. So does DJI have a new competitor?
In case you’re still wondering, 70MPH is very fast for an off-the-shelf drone. While those speeds are impressive, there are limitations that may leave pilots without much enjoyment of these lightning fast quadcopters. A maximum two-mile range and 20-minute flight time equals potentially very short trips in the sky. And that’s with an extra high-endurance battery pack.
So why is the Teal Drone so appealing? For one, it’s nice to have some viable competition in the space. Two, 70MPH is perfect for capturing quick movements in smaller spaces. Another standout feature is its ability to withstand high winds, up to 40MPH, thanks to a “high-accuracy” GPS system. The camera system isn’t too bad either, there is a 13MP 4K optic that is powered by NVIDIA’s Tegra TX1 system.
Teal uses an open-source platform that allows “anyone to build amazing apps” around it. The goal here is to encourage software development that brings this drone into different areas of use. It is controlled via an iOS or Android device and ships with a regular radio controller, as well. A weatherproof design wraps up the feature list on the Teal Drone.
It is available for pre-order today for $1,299 with a free high-endurance battery. If everything goes to plan, you can expect to see it on your doorstep by the end of the year.
