Hopsy’s HomeTap makes you the bartender with its online beer delivery service

Home brewing has seen a massive increase in interest over the last few years. Thanks to products like Beer Bar and MiniBrew, it’s easier than ever. A new product called the Hometap from popular San Francisco-based craft beer service Hopsy wants to bring the entire keg experience to your countertop. This might truly be the Keurig of brews…

Hopsy is hoping to combine its beer delivery service with the popularity of single-brew machines. In fact, the appliance itself is actually made by industry veteran KRUPS, which is known for its own coffee making systems.

Here’s how it works. Simply order a beer from a variety of local breweries and your proprietary two-liter bottles will be delivered to your door a few days later. That’s good for around 67 ounces of brew or just a bit more than a standard growler. From there, the bottle slides into the Hopsy Hometap and you’re ready to serve chilled beer at a moment’s notice. The system is said to keep each bottle fresh for up to 15 days after it is tapped. A bar-style tap lets you play the role of the server, allowing you to pour just the perfect drink.

The downside is, you’re locking yourself into Hopsy’s service. Unlike K-Cups (for the most part), you can’t find cheaper alternatives from other brands that still work with the machine. There are a few different pricing models for this service.

Off the top, you can join the Hopsy Beer Club for $60 per month and receive two bottles, a tasting glass and access to weekly plans. Moving over to a buy-as-you-need-it model, $150 delivers a Home Tap Solo but does not include any beer, which must be purchased separately. Finally, $250 delivers a Home Tap, two bottles, a $50 Hopsy gift card, two glasses and some memorabilia.

Like any subscription service, you’ll have to weigh the benefits of just doing it yourself. But there is a convenience and cool factor to this product that might make it worth your time.
