Wilson’s new iPhone-connected football wants to help you become the next Andrew Luck, pre-order now

With football season just around the corner, Wilson is taking the opportunity to provide new details on its latest upcoming release. The X Connected Football will ship in a few weeks with eyes on improving accuracy, speed, distance and other key elements to throwing a top-grade pass. Of course, it works in conjunction with your iOS or Android device to provide stats and more. Head below for full details.

The X Connected Football is set to arrive on September 8th with a $200 price tag. Although it was first detailed a while back, there was minimal information at that time. Much like the Zepp’s line of smartphone connected sports gear, Wilson hopes to leverage a variety of sensors into information that helps improve your skills.

Built-in accelerometers provide all sorts of information related to the game of football. For example, stats like spin rate, velocity and distance thrown can all be measured and recorded in the app. One of the more interesting features is the ability for the ball to sense catches and drops, which could potentially be very helpful in practice situations. Wilson has also put together a “Quarterback Score” that rates each performance. This data point can be shared via social media channels, as you’d expect.

Much like Wilson’s Connected Basketball, there is a built-in battery that provides only so many uses. In the case of the football, that number is somewhere around 500 hours and 200,000 passes. The thing that really stinks is that once the battery runs out it is not replaceable, leaving you with one expensive football.

Wilson’s X Connected Football is currently available for pre-order in official NFL and junior sizes. The $199 price tag doesn’t just include the pigskin, however. Wilson is also throwing in a copy of Madden NFL ’17 for PS4 or Xbox One.
