Fitness tracker manufacturers have enjoyed massive success over the last year as Apple Watch, Fitbit and others climbed to the top of best-seller lists. But now, Samsung has a slightly different idea when it comes to trimming your waist line. The smart belt, dubbed WELT, hit Kickstarter yesterday and has already blown passed its initial goal. Aside from actively tracking your pant size, this unique clothing accessory keeps tabs on your steps, movements and more…
After making its debut back at CES 2016, the WELT hit showroom floors during IFA this weekend and subsequently launched on Kickstarter. This product comes from a Samsung brain-child with hopes of easing users into fitness tracking. For roughly $119 (or less for early birds) you’ll receive a wearable that doesn’t scream “hey guys, I’m tracking my fitness here!”
WELT takes note of a few key measurables, including steps, waist size, food consumed and calories burned. A built-in pedometer tracks your movements throughout the day to paint an accurate picture of activity levels. In partnership with the iOS and Android app, users can track what kind of food is eaten and how it effects your day or body. Another key data point is movement versus how much time is spent in a chair. The waistband notes any change in your waist size and pings you if it senses over-eating.
As a part of the Kickstarter campaign, backers can choose from four different styles and price points. The Casual model clocks in as low as $99 and features bright colors. WELT Classic (from $99) and Premium (from $179) bring higher-end materials to the mix. Finally, the Limited Edition sells for $199 with just 200 available with special engraving and a closed buckle.
With 29 days remaining, WELT has surpassed its original $30,000 goal by over $20,000. If all goes to plan, it is slated to ship in January 2017.
