It’s not good enough to record podcasts, songs and other things like that through the built-in mic on your iPhone or MacBook. You really need a half decent mic to capture your voice and other sources properly. Considering how affordable it can be to grab a cheap audio interface, or even just a USB mic, anyone looking to get podcast famous should have one of these. Blue Microphones makes some fantastic options and even Audio-Technica on the analog side of things can get the job done nicely. Samson is a company that has provided audio pros with gear for many years and also has a number of very affordable home recording mics that are perfect for all of your internet audio projects.

Originally unveiled at CES 2017, the company’s latest Q2U Recording and Podcasting Pack is hitting store shelves today. It offers users a complete setup for recording nice quality vocals, voice-overs and more right out of the box. And it might be one of the more affordable options on the market…

Unlike the fancy desktop condensers Blue offers, Samson has opted to go for a more versatile approach designed to allow users to record everything from home podcasts and interviews in the field to music demos including vocals and instrumentation.

The dynamic microphone features a solid die-cast build with a heavy gauge mesh grill. It offers both XLR and USB connectivity. That means you’ll be able to record audio over USB directly in to your computer without the need for a mixer or an audio interface, while still having the option to run it over a typical analog connection. Better yet, you can use both simultaneously if you choose to do so.

As you’ll notice in the images, Samson has thrown in a 1/8-inch (3.5mm) headphone monitoring jack to round out the external connectivity here. This is a very nice touch, especially in the field during on-set recording sessions or anytime you don’t have an ideal monitoring situation (audio interface or mixer etc.). According to the company, it will monitor the audio it is capturing as well as the feed from the device/computer you’re recording on.

That kind of connectivity also means it is compatible with all Macs, iPhone, iPad and Android gear, providing you have the proper cables and adapters for the mobile devices. Samson is throwing in the 2.25m USB cable and a 3-meter XLR cable along with some other extras to sweeten the deal.

The Q2U bundle ships with the mic, the aforementioned cables, a desktop tripod stand (with extension piece), a mic clip to get it on there (or any other standard mic stand) and a typical windscreen to remove the ugly plosives and other unwanted mouth noises. All that will run you $59.99. It is available now at B&H.
