Prime Day 2017 sets record as biggest shopping event in Amazon history

Prime Day 2019

Yesterday’s 30-hour Prime Day extravaganza not only saved shoppers hundreds of millions of dollars on discounted items, but it was also the biggest sales day in Amazon’s history. Having grown by more than 60 percent over last year, Amazon’s day of deals touted record sales for many of its own products, as well as other items.

Practically all of Amazon’s hot deals yesterday required a Prime membership, which brought in more new subscribers on July 11th than any other day in the company’s history. The amount of Prime members making purchases was bolstered by this year’s sale as well, nearly doubling the number from last year.

Thanks to a 30% discount, the Echo Dot unsurprisingly was a huge hit for shoppers, coming in as the single most popular purchase made across Amazon yesterday. Of course, other Amazon devices benefited as well, having sold 7 times more Echo devices than previous years, alongside record sales for Fire tablets and Kindles alike. The company’s line of new Alexa-enabled Element TVs also saw a noteworthy sales increase, making it the best-selling TV deal in Amazon history.

While Amazon clearly enjoyed the success of Prime Day, other company’s too saw sales spike. Globally, PlayStation Plus Membership and Instant Pot Programmable Pressure Cookers were among the list of best selling items. Toping the list was the TP-Link Wi-Fi Smart Plug, which sold over 50,000 units. The 30-hour event also shipped more than 3.5 million toys as well as 200,000 lightbulbs.

Amazon Launchpad startups benefited from the sale as well, with items like the Anova Culinary Bluetooth Sous Vide Precision Cooker and LIFX Wi-Fi Smart LED Light Bulb selling more than 100,000 units. Other budding businesses and companies saw success too, with many products noting record sales alongside rising to become best-sellers in their respective categories.

Digital content was also a huge hit amongst Prime members. In the days leading up to Prime Day, more than two times the movies, TV shows, music and audiobooks were downloaded compared to previous years. Amazon Music listeners streamed Something Just Like This by the Chainsmokers & Coldplay more than any other song, while Stillhouse Lake was the most downloaded book from Kindle readers.

With record sales across its product line and more shoppers than previous years, Prime Day 2017 was the largest global shopping event in Amazon history. If you scored any great deals, let us know in the comments below!
