Hands-on: DODOcase handcrafted bookbound case for the 10.5-inch iPad Pro [Video]

The 10.5-inch iPad Pro has no shortage of case and sleeve options, and we’ve reviewed several of them already on sister site 9to5Mac. Yet, if you’re looking for something truly unique, a case that might stand out when compared to others, then DODOcase’s $69.95 bookbound case is a solid option.

Like other bookbound cases produced by the company, the 10.5-inch iPad Pro case is handcrafted in San Francisco. It lends your iPad Pro a look that will stand out amongst the pedestrian, mundane cases that proliferate resellers today.

Personally, I’ve grown slightly weary of the same old black or gray cases and covers that lack much personality; this case comes in a variety of fabric exterior two-tone colors, like green and gunnysack, granite and merlot.

Yet, despite its unique looks, the case features niceties like an elastic loop to secure your Apple Pencil, built-in sleep/wake functionally when closing or opening the cover, and a secure elastic band to keep the case closed.

The polymer tray mounted inside the bookbound case allows your 10.5-inch iPad Pro to snap securely into place, and its design ensures easy access to all ports, including the rear 12-megapixel camera.

When holding your iPad Pro, the case can be folded all the way back to fully expose the tablet. You can also use the elastic strap to force the cover to stay open. When watching movies, or typing with the external keyboard, a strategically placed break in the DODOcase allows the iPad to stand at an ideal viewing angle, and for more extreme angles, you can stand the case in A-frame mode with the help of a “no slip clip” provided by DODOcase upon request.

Make no mistake, a bookbound case will add some bulk to the iPad Pro, especially if you’re used to going with just a Smart Cover or a Smart keyboard. But the case provides adequate protection for the iPad Pro enclosed inside, including full protection for the rear of the device. It also lends a unique look, and classes up the iPad Pro beyond what any of Apple’s first party cover offerings currently do.

The DODOcase won’t be for everyone based on looks alone, but I find it to be a fun, practical way to add a unique look to the tablet. It’s especially nice if you tend to pair an external Bluetooth keyboard, such as Apple’s own Magic Keyboard, instead of using the iPad Pro Smart Keyboard.

DODOcase also offers full color customization, so if the default color options aren’t calling your name, you can go to their website and customize the exterior, interior, elastic band, and even add a custom message to fully make it your own.
