Jaybird enters into wearables with the Reign activity tracker

Today, Jaybird is releasing their first activity tracker, Reign, which is designed by athletes for athletes. The Reign helps improve your performance, gives you insight throughout the day, and learns your body so you can perform better:

The wristband is made out of comfort-flex soft silicon that conforms to your wrist. The clasps magnetically snap and lock in together when putting it on. It comes in three different colors: charge green, white and black. There are two different sizes Small/Medium and Large/X-Large and each one includes three different sized bands. It comes with an ankle strap to be used for cycling and a rain sports band for swimming and intense activites. It is sweat proof and waterproof. Unlike most activity trackers, this one you can go swimming with and it will track how long you are swimming. The band has 12 LEDs on it, which will indicate the users progress towards their daily goal as well as the time. The Reign has a five day battery life and some of the other fitness bands have similar battery life including the Nike FuelBand SE and Fitbit Flex. However, the Jawbone Up has a ten day battery life and the Jawbone Up 24 has a 14 day battery life. It takes two hours for the Reign to charge through micro-USB.

The Reign is an activity tracker that counts steps, calories burned and sleep but is a lot more advanced. It detects what type of activity you are doing: walking, running, swimming, cycling, sports, inactivity and general activity. When you are active you earn Activity points and you gain them by doing long intense activities, which is similar to Nike’s FuelPoints concept. The Reign automatically tracks your sleep and knows how much sleep you need in order to get a good nights rest and to be energized for the next day.

One of the ways that the Reign is different from the other fitness bands is that it features Go Zone. Go Zone learns your body and gets to know when your body wants to be active. It learns this by measuring your heart rate variability, which analyzes the milliseconds between consecutive heart beats and how they vary. This should be done within thirty minutes of waking up in the morning by using the app and placing your finger on the band’s sensor. The heart rate variability will be impacted based off of sleep, physical activity, work, study, stress, travel and illness. Based off this measurement it will let you know that your body wants to be really active or needs a rest day. Your daily activity goal will vary depending on your Go Zone measurement.

Another way the Reign differs from other fitness trackers in that it comes with Reign Pro. Reign Pro is designed to truly help people make better health decisions and goals by having one-on-one telephone appointments with a Reign Pro. This coach will help you and teach you how to interpret the data from the band and be more aware of what your body needs in terms of movement and sleep. They will also help you achieve your goals. This service is free for all users. The Jawbone Up 24 and the Nike FuelBand SE do not offer any service like this, whereas Fitbit offers a similar service for $49.99 per year.

The Reign app is free and is available in the App Store. Currently it does not integrate with the Health app, but that is something Jaybird is looking into for a future update. The Reign app will be available in the Google Play Store in January. The Reign is on sale at Best Buy for $199.
