Small States Review: Grovemade’s iPhone 6 dock puts extra emphasis on design and materials, giveaway worth $99

Update (3/14 9:15am): @schellack wins the Grovemade Dock. Thanks everyone for reading and entering this week’s giveaway.

When it comes to Apple accessories, there are typically two options: materials that are designed to mirror the product and those are meant to complement that product in a different way. The former is typically anodized aluminum, plastic or a metal of some kind, while the latter has been trending towards natural materials like wood or fabrics. Personally, I love seeing natural materials complement modern electronics. There are so many companies manufacturing here in the United States that are taking advantage of the natural resources and skills here.

I’ve been able to spend the last few weeks with Grovemade’s latest dock for the iPhone 6. We’ve covered company’s story before and this time around are able to see its newest home for Apple’s phone.

Head below for full details, our review and to learn how you can win a Grovemade iPhone 6 dock for yourself.

When the iPhone 6 dock from Grovemade first arrives, the shear weight of the package stands out right away. It comes in a dark navy sleeve emblazoned with Grovemade’s simple logo on the front. Slide that off and you’ll find a nest of corrugated cardboard holding the dock, inserts, a signed thank you note from the packager and a sticker. The attention to detail here is noteworthy, Grovemade makes the extra effort to deliver an experience, not just a product wrapped in plastic.

Once it’s out of the box, putting together the dock is fairly straight forward. Grovemade includes two inserts for your Lightning cable (official Apple cable only), it is assembled by feeding the cord through the base and up, then inserting the plastic clip through the side halfway. Then users can adjust the height accordingly, based on cases, etc, before clamping the cable into place. All that is left is putting the wooden cap over the steel base. From there, the iPhone sits in the cradle offering plenty of room to remove the device with ease and access the home button as well.

From a design perspective, Grovemade’s iPhone 6 dock is well thought out and offers a different attempt at providing a home for this device. It’s wood topper is a nice complement for both the phone and the steel base. If you are like me, and enjoy natural materials, this dock provides a nice alternative to brushed aluminum that has become so popular with Apple’s meteoric rise. Its weight is also a defining feature, this thing isn’t going anywhere when manipulating or removing the iPhone from the dock. Bottom line: if you are willing to pay a premium for high-quality natural materials and support an American company, the Grovemade iPhone 6 dock is a great option. With Apple not making an official iPhone 6 dock, there are an abundant of options available, check out our roundup for more.

The Grovemade iPhone 6 dock is available in walnut with black steel or maple coupled with silver steel for $99. Another option is the limited edition model, which sports a walnut top with a solid brass base for $149. All model are available for iPhone 6 or the smaller iPhone 5.
