Dyson’s in-house LED technology is the lifeblood of its gorgeous new desk lamp

The world of LED lighting continues to evolve with bulbs hitting lower prices and new designs emerging along the way. After finding years of success in the vacuum industry, popular manufacturer Dyson is now dabbling in this product category. The son of founder James Dyson, Jake, has set out to re-think the way LED lighting functions with the goal of prolonging its lifespan.

Dyson is marrying this technology with its knack for design to create a stunning light that will standout in any home.

After extensive research, Dyson has arrived at a solution for cooling LED lightbulbs that leans on technology found in satellites. The issue with LED lighting is that it gets hot during use, not as much as traditional bulbs, but still enough that it can affect the quality and longevity. This is a common problem that other companies have attempted to overcome. Cree notably introduced a “4Flow” design that puts air holes in the bulb to pull cooler air through during use. Dyson has taken a different approach, combining a highly technical setup and a gorgeous design to create a long-lasting product.

By using an extended “heat-pipe” the higher temperatures are pulled away from the lamp via an aluminum heat sink. The cooler temperatures, roughly 131 degrees fahrenheit, will keep the bulb running at full strength for 37 years according to the company’s website.

Designer Jake Dyson explains further:

“Other designers have made half-hearted attempts to cool LEDs. But it’s not enough. Their lights are built to fail and they don’t seem to mind. We mind. So we’ve invented the first light that cools LEDs properly. As a result, it lasts for 37 years.”

The Dyson CSYS Light relies on a tension design that enables the lamp to rotate 360 degrees as well as vertically and side to side. Eight LED bulbs provide 587lx of light from the lamp, which is adjustable depending on the situation. Dyson has built-in a touch sensitive base at the bottom that adjusts the dimming as needed, it will even remember your last settings when you turn it on again.

If you’re interested in picking one up, you’ll need to be prepared to pay a pretty penny. The desk and clamp models start at $649, while the taller floor lamp will cost you $899.
