Suunto’s latest fitness tracker has a thoughtful design, lacks one crucial feature

With warmer weather coming, we’ve seen a slew of new fitness tracking releases from Fitbit, Garmin and others. Suunto has now stepped up to the plate with the latest addition to its family of devices, the Spartan Ultra. It takes a rugged design and pairs it with all-day battery life. Built-in GPS and specific tracking modes for individual activities lead an impressive feature list…

Suunto’s latest creation focuses on bring a full-function suite of measurables to your wrist. Everyday data points like steps, calories and active time are constantly recorded so you can track your progress. Much like Apple Watch, you can choose from a list of activities that offer greater insight to your workouts. For example, cycling, running, swimming and others are all included.

Spartan Ultra uses its built-in GPS and accelerometer to provide a more accurate picture of your workouts. While this may hold true, the lack of a built-in heart rate monitor knocks this new release down a few notches in comparison to other recent releases. You can add that functionality with Suunto’s optional Smart Sensor, but that will cost extra.

That issue aside, a reinforced casing and sapphire crystal glass should offer a strong design for rough activities. The color touchscreen display is paired with a few physical controls to handle settings, changing modes, etc. iOS and Android connectivity bring all of your information to one location and provides additional data points over time.

Ready for the price come August? The entry-level model will start at $700 with an upgraded Titanium rendition pops up to $800. The add-on sensor will bring another $50 to your bill. Wow. Suunto has a beautiful design and some impressive features but for that price, it’s hard to recommend it over more affordable options from Fitbit and Garmin.
