Review: This is Ground’s Mod 3 carries your iPad and accessories in a luxurious leather wrapping [Video]

It was nearly two years ago to the date that we first showed off This is Ground’s original Mod Tablet carrying case. Since then, it’s gone through two extensive revisions resulting in the release of the new third generation model last week. We’ve been able to spend some time with the Mod 3 over the last while in an attempt to apply it in real life scenarios.

Wrapped in Italian Leather and geometrically designed, this carryall screams attention to detail with Mad Men design cues. The latest version is slightly bigger, includes a Tile Bluetooth tracking device and ships with all inserts.

How’d it do? Head below to find out.

Design

As with the original Mod and the second generation after it, This is Ground’s modular creation is focused on the needs of creators. Make no mistake about it, the third generation is perfect for any professional on-the-go but for artists and techies, it’s a must-have. The Mod 3 has a $349 price tag but it somehow manages to feel like it should have been even higher.

Starting with materials, This is Ground has done an exceptional job of sourcing leathers from around the world. For this review, we had the Toffee colorway but it also ships in Cognac (dark brown), Charcoal, French Grey and Bomber. It has a mid-century feel despite its design for the latest technology. Clean stitching and sharp lines highlight the outside while a thoughtful interior offers up a customizable storage experience.

The third generation Mod improves on previous designs in a few key areas. First, it’s slightly thicker, allowing more room for taller items (such as Apple’s wall charger). Just like a piece of luggage, when the Mod 3 is loaded with your gear, it can be slightly difficult to close. The decision to provide a little extra space helps to remedy this situation.

This is Ground has an entire line of inserts designed for different professions, from techies to designers to make-up artists. One of its most popular add-ons was the Executive. The left side of the Mod 3 was redesigned with this layout in mind. There is storage for an iPhone (my 7 Plus fit comfortably) plus multiple buckles, a leather strap plus an additional pocket storage space. It ships with a standard insert with one large pocket that zips closed. Flipping the middle over reveals a horizontal sleeve for an iPad (up to 9.7-inches in size) and business cards.

One last addition to the Mod 3 is the inclusion of a Tile tracker with every purchase. There is a hidden pocket in the iPad compartment that is meant to keep the smartphone accessory in place. You can learn more about its capabilities in our full review, but it’s a thoughtful inclusion with this product.

Uses

For the past few weeks, I’ve made every effort to use the Mod Tablet 3 when I’ve left the house. iPad-enthusiasts are more likely to find it useful than someone that depends heavily on a MacBook. But with content creation becoming easier and easier on Apple’s tablet, the Mod 3 becomes all the more viable.

You’ll be able to fit a surprising amount of gear inside. There’s plenty of room for cables, batteries and more. But if you’re someone that prefers any headphones that aren’t in-ears, you’ll be hard pressed to make them fit inside the Mod. For me, it works out perfectly as a way to manage all of the necessities that you’d usually throw in your bag. One thing is for sure, there’s no shortage of areas to hold your gear.

Conclusion

The Mod Tablet 3 is designed with creative professionals in mind and that shines through in every area. You’ll need to make a concerted effort to use it but once you get into the routine, it’s very useful to have around. This is Ground does an excellent job of blending design and materials. It’s latest creation is just another example of its attention to detail. At $349, it’s steeper than other alternatives that we’ve featured in the past. However, if you’re someone that prefers attention to detail, this purchase will be money well spent.
