As we approach the holiday season, all of the year’s biggest titles are about to hit store shelves. While we are still about a month out from the big November push, we have some major releases dropping this month. Mafia 3 takes us back to streets of New Orleans (New Bordeaux) circa 1968 in 2K’s open world organized crime title, the latest installment in the Paper Mario series is dropping and the first of the Dark Souls 3 DLC is just over a week away now. Gears of War returns with its groundbreaking cover system and buttery smooth controls, but its the horse-back, Zeppelin destruction of the WW1-set Battlefield 1 that has us most excited:
Mafia 3 – Oct 7th
Anyone interested in open-world games, should likely give this one a try. Reviews have been pretty good with some negativity towards glitches and overall mission structure, but that sounds like the usual stuff we get from these big open world titles. Set in the racially charged south, just after Vietnam in 1968, players will take on the role of Lincoln Clay and his attempt to takeover the organized crime world in New Bordeaux. The setting alone – 2K’s version of New Orleans – is more than worth the price of admission. So here’s to the bayou and feeding bodies to the gators!
Mafia 3 $60 or $48 for Prime members
Paper Mario: Color Splash – Oct 7th
Along with the new ‘cut out’ feature that allows Mario to alter the world around him in creative ways, Paper Mario fans can also expect a color-altering Paint Hammer and more in the Color Splash. Much like previous installments, this is a charming little action-adventure game with some interesting puzzle elements and turn-based combat.
Paper Mario: Color Splash $60 or $48 for Prime members
Gears of War 4 – Oct 11th
Gears of War 4 released without much fanfare, despite receiving solid reviews across the board. Its smooth mechanics, cover system and co-op gameplay have all been praised by critics and gamers. The game follows the story of protagonist J.D. Fenix (along with Kait Diaz or Del Walker) and features an enhanced version of the gameplay Gears fans have come to love.
Gears of War 4 $60 or $48 for Prime members
Rise of the Tomb Raider: 20 Year Celebration – Oct 11th
As a quick honorable mention, Rise of the Tomb Raider will be making its way to PlayStation 4 this month. Already released on Xbox One to solid reviews, this release will see all previously available DLC packs come bundled in along with PS VR support.
Rise of the Tomb Raider: 20 Year Celebration $60
Battlefield 1 – Oct 21st
Battlefield 1 is clearly one of the most animated shooters of the year. As the COD franchise moves further and further into the future, the folks over at EA Dice are taking Battlefield fans back to WW1. Which is the first time EA has done so since the mid-nineties. Standout features include WW1 era weaponry and vehicles including battleships Zeppelins and horses. The war starts on October 21st, but you can more details on early access right here.
That special edition Battlefield 1-inspired Xbox One S console in new colors is definitely worth checking out as well.
Battlefield 1 $60 or $48 for Prime members
Dark Souls 3: Ashes of Ariandel – Oct 25th
The Dark/Demon Souls series has become a mainstay in console gaming since it debuted some years ago. Dark Souls 3 was no exception, challenging gamers to the very brink of sanity around very dark corner of its punishing world. The first of its scheduled DLC, Ashes of Ariandel, is set to launch later this month. Series creator Miyazaki said we can expect a new gothic aesthetic and approach different from the game proper, that will thread its way through the next add-on as well.
It will run you $14.99 on its own, or you can drop $25 on the Season Pass which will net you access to the second add-on when it hits next year. Good luck and ‘Prepare To Die’.
Dark Souls 3: Ashes of Ariandel $15 or $25 w/ the Season Pass
