Star-Lord and the rest of Marvel’s most unlikely group of box office super stars are not only returning to the sliver screen this year, but also our game consoles. The highly anticipated Guardians of the Galaxy 2 is scheduled to hit theaters in just few month’s time, but before that we will see the release of Telltale’s GotG Series Episode 1 across just about every platform.
Developer Telltale is well known for bringing its unique brand of game design to well-established IP. Its dramatic, interactive story telling has achieved considerable success with franchises like The Walking Dead, Batman, Back to the Future, Borderlands, Game of Thrones and even with an episodic story-based adventure set in the Minecraft universe. After seeing so many successful crossovers, it’s no wonder Marvel wanted in on the action.
Just about all of Telltale’s games come in episodic format, usually with around 5 episodes each that can be purchased separately, or all in a single package at some point. In recent years, the company is well known for porting its games to a wide range of platforms and Guardians of the Galaxy is no exception. It will release next month on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, iOS and Android devices.
This morning we got a brand new trailer for the game, which gives a bit more insight into the story and characters that will be making appearance. Don’t worry, Groot is back (but in his normal full-grown state). In fact, it looks like most of the characters from the first film are making an appearance. Telltale has done a great job with the character models (for the most part) and the voice acting. The witty banter from the film is back and they have mostly nailed the voice actors by the sounds of it at this point. You can expect to hear Emily O’Brien as Gamora and Nolan North as Rocket, among many other seasoned players.
Thanos, the destroyer of all worlds, will be one of the main antagonists here, as he is showcased in the new trailer. Previous reports suggest the game will be independent of the film’s established canon, however, Telltale is known for drawing from multiple sources to create its experiences. It will be hiding easter eggs in the game for fans of the film, comics and animated series. We also know there will be at least one female character in the series that has not yet been seen outside of comic books.
When the game was initially unveiled, we did learn the series would follow the Guardians through a major battle and the hunt for a powerful relic, but we’ll have to wait a few more weeks to get additional details.
The first episode of the 5-part Guardians of the Galaxy Telltale series, “Tangled Up in Blue”, releases on April 18th for PS4, Xbox One and mobile. But if you’re an Amazon Prime member, you can grab the pre-order for the first episode and the season pass to download the rest for $23.99 shipped, down from the regular $29.99 listing.
