Call of Duty heads back to WWII: official reveal trailer, details, more

After some leaks over the past week or so, Activision and developer Sledgehammer Games officially unveiled this year’s entry in the long-running Call of Duty series. After rocket-boosting way into the future in 2016’s Infinite Warfare

As expected, there will be a full story mode campaign here. Players will take on the role of Ronald “Red” Daniels of the First infantry Division who is seeing his first real action in the war. The game takes place entirely in the European theater of WWII including storming the beach at Normandy on D-Day, battling through Belgium and ultimately the push towards Germany. Sledgehammer Games is also including its version of the Battle of the Bulge.

We have some details on multiplayer as well. A new “War” mode will see players taking on the role of either the Allies or the Axis in some of the most well-known moments and battles of World War II. Today’s event was mostly focused on the setting and main campaign, but it also sounds like WWII will forgo the typical class system in favor of something called Divisions which allow players to “enlist in the unit of their choice”.

The Co-op mode is a completely separate story from the campaign and multiplayer. It is based on the “Third Reich’s desperate attempt to create an army at the end stages of the war”. In other words, Zombie mode. Sweet! Here is the only thing they showed on it:

You can also expect a base “Headquarters” area to hang out in between matches that sounds a lot like the social “Tower” hub found in Destiny. We will be hearing a lot more about Headquarters and multiplayer in general at E3, but Sledgehammer did say it provides “interaction, recognition and awards unlike anything experienced in the franchise to date.”

Here’s the new reveal trailer:

It has been nearly 10-years since COD was set in World War II and it is certainly nice to see a change from the rocket-packs and spaceships. Hopefully Sledgehammer has found a way to make the old-school, low-tech weaponry as fun as the futuristic stuff.

Call of Duty: WWII will release on Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC on the first Friday in November (Nov 3rd) just like it has the previous two years. Pre-orders will grant players access to the early private beta, but we have only seen listings go live at GameStop thus far.
