LEGO is known for making some of the coolest reproductions of real life machines, cars and buildings. Some of its best kits come out of the LEGO Ideas program, which brings projects to life if there is enough interest.
The latest of which comes from a builder named saabfan that delivers a 1:110 scaled down version of Apollo Saturn V. Standing nearly 40-inches tall, this reproduction includes a lunar lander, the ship itself and minifig astronauts. It may just be my favorite LEGO release ever.
Ultimately, the model that comes to market will be slightly different than the LEGO Ideas submission. These projects go through a re-design before hitting the mass market to ensure consumer-friendliness.
LEGO includes three display stands, so you can show off your Apollo Saturn as you see fit. It can be laid out in three horizontal sections, showing off the interior or displayed together rising over 39-inches tall.
My personal favorite part of this set is the Lunar Module, which recreates the infamous scene of Neil Armstrong and pilot Buzz Aldrin on the moon. LEGO includes two minifigs that are designed to look like spacemen alongside an American flag, just like the real astronauts carried. These extra pieces are sure to be a hit with LEGO collectors when this kit hits the open-market.
The original Saturn V stood over 360-feet tall, which explains the notable length on LEGO’s latest release. Its upper section, the S-IVB rocket stage, houses the Apollo Lunar Lander and a portion of the Command and Service Module. LEGO’s attention to detail on these specific areas is very impressive.
There is going to be nearly 2,000 pieces in this set when it hits store shelves on June 1st. While that may seem like a lot, the monstrous Death Star kit features over 4,000 pieces. No matter, LEGO’s impressive attention to design here is really incredible.
Saabfan first dropped the original concept on LEGO Ideas back in August of 2014. After receiving nearly 10,000 votes from fans, it entered the automatic review program by LEGO designers. After officially being confirmed in June of 2016, it’s finally ready to ship this summer. That just goes to show how long the Ideas process can drag out from start to finish.
The official LEGO NASA Apollo Saturn V set will be released to the general public on June 1st with a $119 price tag. It will be available direct from LEGO and at other major national retailers.
