TCL just introduced a line of affordable 4K Roku TVs with Dolby Vision HDR

When TCL first introduced its Roku enabled TV in 2014 it was more or less a budget option that could get you a few Smart features without paying for the big name brand Smart TV. Now it’s building on that foundation but moving up to higher-end sets. The company just introduced its first 4K Roku TV line with Dolby Vision HDR.

High-dynamic range or HDR has been a big trend in more expensive TV brands like Sony, Samsung or LG. But, now we’re starting to see the technology move into less expensive sets. The benefit of HDR is that you can get more dynamic colors, blacker blacks, and see more detail when watching movies, TV shows or playing video games.

There are two new lines introduced by TCL today, the C-series and the P-Series. Both will feature Roku’s latest operating system and the ability to pause live TV for up to 90 minutes (if you add a USB flash drive to the TV). Also, there’s an option to recommend streaming content based on what you’re watching on TV.

Both series will come in sizes 55, 65, and 75-inch, but the P Series will primarily focus on picture quality, while the C Series will have a slimmer design. The 55-inch P Series model will be available for a “special introductory price” of a low $599 for pre-order on Amazon starting May 26th. The C Series TVs are priced a little higher, between $700 and $2,000 and will also be available for pre-order at that time.

With the addition of Dolby Vision HDR to these inexpensive sets, it’s a good sign that the TV industry as a whole is moving to embrace high-dynamic range. Also, services like Amazon and Netflix are starting to provide more HDR and Dolby Vision content in response to its popularity.

Together now its estimated both services offer more than 100 hours of Dolby Vision HDR content. Plus, with Hollywood studios putting out a steady stream of Dolby Vision titles as well. So as 4K image resolution is pretty much a standard by now, picture quality has become the new premium feature to look for in these new sets.
