Nintendo has been on a role this year with the success of Switch and the release of several handheld options. That includes the 2DS Super Mario Bros. 2 bundle, the New 2DS XL handheld, Metroid Samus Edition New 3DS XL and the recently unveiled Splatoon 2 Switch bundle for North America. While some suggested the hybrid nature of the Switch might slow sales and development in Nintendo’s mobile business, but that doesn’t seem to be the case. Straight from Gamescom 2017, Nintendo is now introducing the New 3DS XL Super Nintendo Entertainment System Edition…
That mouthful of a new product (it literally just keeps getting worse Nintendo) is coming in a couple months time with a vintage European style Super Nintendo design. As you likely know, back in the day North American Super Nintendo Entertainment Systems shipped in Nintendo grey with a series of lovely purple accents. While it will always hold a special place in my memory, the multi-colored Japanese/European/Australian design has always been more appealing to me.
Not unlike the Super Famicom-style 3DS XL that dropped in Japan about a year ago, the new Super Nintendo-themed XL sports the multi-colored face buttons and logo, along with mock-up power, reset and eject buttons along the back of the handheld console. It looks fantastic.

As you may have been expecting here, there is still no word on a North American release of this new handheld. And it was announced via the Nintendo of Europe Twitter account, so it doesn’t look good. Nintendo seems to have some strange idea in its mind that North American fans of its brand won’t want the exclusive European/Japanese design. Which is clearly crazy. Give us one of these and take our money now Nintendo.
North Americans will not be getting one these starting October 10th when they hit store shelves in Europe. Hopefully Nintendo will come to its senses and realize the foreign designs of its vintage hardware are just as appealing to us in North America.
The same thing just happened with the coveted SNES Classic Edition console that as recently started to go up for pre-order. We will be getting the grey/purple and everyone else will get the multi-colored version.
