Microsoft quietly announces the relaunch of its iconic IntelliMouse

If there’s one iconic mouse that’s always been around it’s the Microsoft IntelliMouse. I’ve had numerous versions of this mouse, and they’re actually still in use today. I loved the IntelliMouse because it never failed and had amazing tracking for what it was. The original IntelliMouse was wired, much like the relaunched unit from Microsoft. It features laser tracking, a DPI range of up to 3200, and those iconic back and forward buttons.

Microsoft didn’t relaunch the IntelliMouse 3.0 with any fanfare and didn’t even bother to issue press releases. The company quietly added it to their Surface website as “coming soon,”  while an Amazon listing indicates a $39.99 price point with an October 30th release. Microsoft doesn’t say much about their mouse or the new features, however.

Inspired by the Microsoft Intellimouse 3.0, the new Microsoft Classic IntelliMouse has exceptional tracking and the firm scroll wheel that fans loved about the original. Tracking is now even more precise with a DPI range up to 3200.

Though the official Microsoft website only gives the information above, the Amazon listing does provide a bit more info:

  • Ultra-slim and lightweight.
  • Quickly and efficiently click to complete your most common tasks with three customizable buttons.
  • The ergonomic design of the new Microsoft Classic IntelliMouse is comfortable for hours of use.
  • Plug in the fast, wired USB connector without waiting for Bluetooth to pair or searching for a dongle.
  • The exceptional tracking that fans loved about IntelliMouse 3.0 is even more precise with a DPI range up to 3200.

They also have the following as more information about the IntelliMouse 3.0 return:

Inspired by the Microsoft Intellimouse 3.0, the new Microsoft Comet has exceptional tracking and the firm scroll wheel that fans loved about the original. Tracking is now even more precise with a DPI range up to 3200.

Work exactly the way you want with the new Microsoft Comet. Quickly and efficiently complete your most common tasks with three customizable* buttons. Plug in the fast, wired USB connector and immediately get into your flow without waiting for Bluetooth to pair or searching for a dongle.

The ergonomic design of the new Microsoft Comet is comfortable for hours of use. Fluidly handle every maneuver for your most detailed projects with carefully calculated weight, stability, and control.

* Customization not available on devices running Windows 10 S.

I’m truly excited to see this mouse, and will likely pre-order one as I loved using my original IntelliMice. For $40, you really can’t get a better, more reliable mouse, as long as the new one holds true to the same standards the original did.
