Canon has been a common household name when it comes to cameras for years. Its latest camera announcement, the PowerShot G1 X MK3, brings something new to the point-and-shoot table. With the announcement of the PowerShot G1 X MK3, Canon showed the world that they’re serious in the point-and-shoot space. By including the acclaimed Canon 24.2MP APS-C sensor from their DSLR lineup, they did yet another thing to set this camera apart. Canon claims that the sensor can shoot “breathtaking, nuanced images with wide dynamic range, amazing detail, and low noise, even at high ISOs.”
With a 24-72mm equivalent lens, Canon gives you the perfect ability to shoot both near and far since you can’t just change the lens if needed. Personally, with both my Lumix G7 and Canon T3i I rarely find the need to shoot outside of that focal range. Canon has also optically stabilized the lens to make it easier for you to take steady shots without the use of a tripod.
When it comes to focusing, most people prefer to just use autofocus because it’s easier. Canon introduced a few years ago their dual pixel CMOS autofocus with phase detection. That’s a lot of words, but basically, it means the camera can autofocus extremely fast. The upgraded sensor also allows for ISO ranges o 100-25600, allowing you to be able to shoot better in low light.
With its built-in electronic viewfinder and flip-out touchscreen LCD, you can see exactly the picture you’re going to get before you take it. I prefer an EVF to a live viewfinder because it allows me to see changes in ISO and shutter speed in real-time, instead of after I take the picture. There are those who don’t like this, but for a point-and-shoot, this really is the best option. Also, with the touchscreen LCD on the back, you can just tap where you want the focus to be and the camera does the work, just like your phone. This makes it even easier to get the picture how you were originally envisioning it before you took it.
The PowerShot G1 X MK3 also features Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and NFC technologies. These features are becoming essential to new cameras as they allow you to easily share images from the camera to your phone, tablet, or even computer without having to remove the SD card. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth also allow you to control the camera from your phone or tablet. This means that you can set your camera up on a tripod and walk away so your interference with the camera doesn’t add any unwanted shake to the image. It can also be used to monitor yourself and change focus from far away, making it the perfect selfie and vlogging companion.
With dust and water resistance, the PowerShot G1 X MK3 is the perfect travel companion. It shoots video at full 1920x1080P at 60FPS, and can even take photos at up to 9FPS. With a retail price of $1299, this isn’t the lowest-priced point-and-shoot camera on the market, but most other point and shoot cameras don’t have a sensor like the PowerShot G1 X MK3. Currently, it’s only available for pre-order from Canon, B&H, Adorama, Best Buy, and others soon.
