Nintendo’s New SNES-themed 3DS XL + Mario Kart coming holiday 2017, pre-order now

Pre-order

A couple months ago, Nintendo unveiled one of the most impressive options in its 3DS line yet. At the time, European gamers were treated with a New 3DS XL designed to look like the classic SNES system from overseas, but there was no sign the machine would be coming stateside. While some of us (other than the lucky winner of our giveaway) won’t get a chance to own one of those special little SNES Edition consoles Nintendo re-released, the New 3DS XL SNES Edition is now here to fill the void.

We were hoping as much as we were expecting Nintendo to bring a version of the SNES-themed 3DS XL to the US ahead of the holiday season, and Nintendo has done just that. This morning, posts began to hit Twitter pointing to Amazon’s pre-order listing for the new US Super Nintendo 3DS XL.

It is essentially the same machine as the previously announced European version, but with the classic grey and purple colorway North American gamers are familiar with. As a quick refresher, when SNES originally released it took on a slightly different form/color in the US than the rest of the world.

The Super NES Edition features the purple face buttons, along with the traditional dark grey D-pad. Along the top and back of the clam shell design you’ll find classic Super Nintendo look with faux power, reset and eject buttons. Better yet, it comes with a free download of the Super Nintendo version of Super Mario Kart.

The North American New 3DS XL Super Nintendo Entertainment System Edition will release about two weeks after the European version at the end of the next month. Amazon is also offering it for pre-order at $199.99 with a scheduled November 27th release date. We expect stock on this thing to go quickly, so be sure to lock one in now to ensure it is yours for the holidays.

Once again, Nintendo is not selling the awesome European version in North America, and vice-versa. Clearly it is looking to keep the markets separate, despite the likelihood that it would fly off store shelves here as well.

It has been a busy year for the folks at Nintendo, on top of the Switch and the new SNES Edition. We have also seen the 2DS Super Mario Bros. 2 bundle and the Metroid Samus Edition New 3DS XL along with Splatoon 2 and Super Mario Odyssey Switch bundles.
