New Super Mario Bros. was released back in 2006 for the Nintendo DS. While being somewhat criticized for its overall simplicity and similarities to previous titles, the game went on to sell nearly 31 million copies, firmly placing it on the best-selling games of all-time list. Like with most Mario titles, fans just couldn’t get enough of the original DS action and have taken it upon themselves to create a bunch of new levels and worlds for the game…
As you were likely expecting, we are talking about one of those fan-created projects that looks to less than legal means to offer up new and interesting experiences with the characters and environments from the official releases. Today, we are taking a look at Newer Super Mario Bros. DS. The fan made project is essentially and expansion of the original DS release that runs via emulation on your Mac or PC.
Courtesy of the creators of Newer Super Mario Bros. Wii from a few years back, this hack essentially doubles the length of the original experience with 80 new levels spread across 8 different world maps.
Using the New Super Mario Bros. Editor, the creators have also introduced graphical changes and some soundtrack adjustments. You can expect the return of a classic power-up, as well as both original and ported sound effects.
Despite the trailer below showing the game running on a DS, due to the use of emulators and the editor mentioned above, Newer Super Mario Bros. DS is only available on the desktop. You can catch a good look at the gameplay along with some power-ups, level design and much more below in the release trailer:
This is not necessarily a standalone experience but rather an expansion for the aforementioned ROM version of the game. Fortunately, the folks behind the fan project have made it fairly easy to get things up and running on your Mac/PC.
Needless to say, Nintendo is likely not overly impressed here, but here’s to hoping it stays around long enough to give it a spin. Somehow the group has managed to keep the Wii hack live that it created years ago, but you never know when Nintendo might put its Hammer Bros’ suit on and smash the whole thing to oblivion. But, as of right now, it is completely free, so jump on it if you’re interested in some new levels for New Super Mario Bros.
