Netgear extends your Wi-Fi to the backyard w/ the new Orbi Outdoor Satellite

The Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas is just around the corner now. We are already seeing some major announcements from some of the biggest players in the tech world including LG’s massive 88-inch OLED display, GE’s new Siri-enabled smart home gear, Mophie’s high-end powerstation and this year’s fleet of Honda robots. CES brings out the best and brightest in the world of tech with some of the most exciting announcements of the year and you’ll find everything right here on Electronicsforward.

Ahead of this year’s show, Netgear is looking to expand your Wi-Fi across your entire property with the latest addition to its Orbi home networking lineup…

Initially debuting back in 2006, Netgear’s Orbi system brought mesh networking to the home consumer market with its hybrid router/range extender products. This multi-unit approach to home Wi-Fi was designed to kill dead spots found in larger and older homes, but it wasn’t necessarily meant to cover the backyard as well.

Enter the new Orbi Outdoor Satellite. As the name implies, Netgear is looking to extend your Orbi network to your front porch, backyard and surrounding property with its new outdoor hub. Much like the existing (indoor) Orbi Whole Home Wi-Fi System, you’re looking at the same Wi-Fi technology – dedicated network names/channels for streamlined communication between each of your Orbi devices – albeit specifically designed to handle the rigors of an outdoor environment.

Along with the 2,500 square foot range, the new Orbi Satellite is weather-resistant to dust, water and freezing temperatures (rated IP56). While there is no mention of its ability to handle extremely hot temperatures, it does sound like it can deal with your typical rain fall. It also has a programmable night-light built-in to the unit.

Using the same Fastlane3 tech with Tri-band WiFi at 5Ghz that the main indoor system uses, the Satellite works within minutes and can be mounted or free-standing.

We weren’t expecting this add-on to come cheap, and it certainly doesn’t with its $300+ price tag. Available through all major retailers starting right now, the new Orbi Outdoor Satellite will run you $329.99.

While that is pricey, all things considered, it is about in-line with what Netgear has been asking for just about everything in the Orbi home mesh network lineup.
