Behind the Screens is a new weekly Electronicsforward series that takes you through our writers’ setups, be it mobile, desktop, gaming or home theater. First up is Trevor Daugherty, Senior Editor at Electronicsforward.

CES 2018 is about to kick off in Las Vegas this weekend, and I thought it would be a good time to give you glimpse into my mobile setup. Going on the road requires the essentials like my 2016 13-inch MacBook Pro, external display and batteries. But there’s also room for a Nintendo Switch, too. Head below to see what’s in my CES 2018 backpack.

Apple 13-inch MacBook Pro w/ Touch Bar

I was an early adopter on Apple’s MacBook Pro with Touch Bar. After picking it up in late 2016, it’s become my go-to machine when I’m away from my desk. However, it’s not perfect and in hindsight, I probably would’ve gone for the 15-inch model.

I still find joy in some of the futuristic Touch Bar features and love the quick access to 1Password and Apple Pay. But, going on the road with a handful of dongles for content creation isn’t ideal.

AOC USB-C External 1080p Portable Monitor

AOC sent over its portable USB-C monitor awhile back after we did some initial coverage on its release. I didn’t realize how helpful it was going to be until the holidays rolled around and I ended up using it everyday at my parent’s kitchen table.

Being USB-C powered, it plays nicely with my MacBook and performs much more fluidly than an alternative such as the Duet app on iPad. It comes with a protective cover that doubles as an adjustable stand. This is the best addition that I’ve made to my mobile setup in the last year, and I highly recommend it.

Mophie powerstation AC Battery Pack

Anker PowerCore+ 26800mAh 30W USB-C Battery Pack

Anker USB-C 5-port 60W Wall Charger

Aside from Apple’s bundled USB-C Wall Charger, I generally carry two Anker power supplies with me. Just this week I covered Mophie’s new powerstation AC that has both USB-C/A and a traditional outlet integrated within, so I’ll be giving that a trial at CES, as well.

Anker’s USB-C 5-port 60W Wall Charger is a must-have whether at home or on-the-go. USB-C with Power Delivery is a great way to charge up your Nintendo Switch, battery packs and other products.

Cocoon Grid-It Organizer

Cocoon Grid-It has been around for a quite awhile now, but it’s still my go-to organizer away from home. The flexibility of the rubberized elastic is perfect for just about any cable or portable battery you can throw at it. There’s also a zipper pouch on the back that works well for loose-ends such as memory cards, pencils, pens, etc.

iPhone X

DJI Osmo+

GoPro HERO6 Black

There’s always the opportunity to capture and create content away from home. My go-to lineup includes an iPhone X, DJI’s Osmo+ and a the latest GoPro HERO6. Each camera offers flexibility for different scenarios, which is perfect for CES.

I’m particularly partial to the Osmo+. Integrated stabilization and an iPhone mount make it easy to capture footage while moving and quickly transfer it to your device.

HERO6 is the best camera that GoPro has ever made, and I highly recommend it for those fast shots that come up from time to time.

V-Moda Crossfade II Wireless

Logitech MX Anywhere 2S

Incase 20th Anniversary MacBook Sleeve

Rounding out the list of accessories in my bag are V-Moda’s Crossfade Wireless Headphones, which are lightweight and unbelievably comfortable to wear. I also dig the metal accents.

Logitech’s MX Anywhere 2S Mouse is one of the best in the business. You can read my full review here, but the highlights are definitely fully customizable buttons and impressive battery life.

Incase just introduced its latest MacBook Sleeve in celebration of 20 years worth of business. This old classic still gets the job done with iconic styling and a nicely padded design.

TM1985 Roll Top Backpack

I first came across TM1985’s Roll Top Backpack when I first came to Electronicsforward. I’ve loved this bag ever since. It’s made by hand in Brooklyn and has beautiful stitching and color. If you’re someone who prefers dedicated storage, this backpack might not be for you. But, I know that I’m likely to be the only one with it at CES. A fair trade-off in my eyes.
