Fitness trackers come in all kinds of form-factors these days. But if you can’t bear to slap a Fitbit on your wrist alongside your favorite watch, then Level may be the fitness tracking solution you’ve been searching for. The smartphone-enabled glasses offer just about all the functionality of a traditional wearable like step count, exercise time and more.
Other smart specs haven’t historically opted to focus on fitness features. While others are headlined by mounted cameras, displays and even bone-conductive headphones, the folks at VSP have decided to go for a much less complicated approach. With keeping tabs on the wearer’s movement as a top priority, the smartphone-enabled frames launch with a $270 price tag.
Aside from being just like any other pair of glasses, Level also packs some interesting technology into the temples. Thanks to an array of sensors including an accelerometer, gyroscope, and magnetometer, these glasses can catalog steps, distance, calories burned and one’s total activity time. Level charges via a magnetic connector and is said to get you around 5 days of battery life on a single charge.
Level is based on a Bluetooth connection that pairs to the iOS or Android companion app which visualizes all of the metrics that Level collects. What may be the most interesting use of the app is that it allows you to locate your glasses if you misplace them. At launch, the smart specs will come in 3 different frame styles, each with 4 color options to choose from: black, tortoise, slate, and grey tortoise.
Of course Level isn’t ideal for everything. For starters, contact-wearers or those lucky folk who simply have no need for vision-enhancement of any kind probably won’t want to don an accessory on their face just to add fitness tracking. But for those who already own and rely on glasses, these may be a compelling solution.
The range of styles available at launch will be another telling factor for the success of Level. People may not care so much about the style of their wrist-mounted fitness trackers, but most won’t wear just any old pair of glasses. Regardless, Level is certainly a novel take on smart glasses. Let’s just hope VSP’s vision for the future of fitness trackers is 20/20.
