Focus Project Y is an eBike after a cyclist’s own heart w/ traditional design & lightweight frame

If you rely on your bike to get to and from work every day, odds are you’re going to want to ride something stylish. eBikes are great for longer commutes, but that comes at the trade-off of bulky, mostly unappealing designs. Enter Focus Project Y, an eBike boasting a lightweight frame, 16mph top-speed and most importantly, a design that traditional cyclists will feel right at home with.

At the forefront of Focus’s new eBike is its eye-catching design. Modeled around a traditional frame, it packs the same style of iconic grip, 35-millimeter tires and slick frame design.

Aesthetics aren’t the only Focus of Project Y, as the components that comprise the stylish eBike are just as well thought out as its design. Based around a full carbon frame, the bike also utilizes Shimano disc brakes, thru-axle design and rapid axle technology on the forks to boast enhanced durability. As of now, Focus has a variety of configurations and colorways, all of which are super slick in my book.

Another interesting design choice is that Project Y’s battery and drive system come as a single, easily removable package. The battery/motor hybrid packs 250-watt hours of power alongside the 400 watt motor. Pedal assist is engaged intelligently when the bike senses you’re in need of a boost, making it difficult to nail down an actual range.

These stats are lower than competing eBikes, but for good reason. Weight is one of the biggest downsides to eBikes, a problem that Project Y solves by weighing in at only 27.5-pounds thanks to its frame and other components. Just to put that into perspective, that’s not too much heavier than traditional bike, and a lot less than 50+ pound designs we’ve seen in the past.

The most disappointing aspect of Project Y is that the eBike is still in its prototype phase, so it’ll be some time before you’ll be able to make it your go-to daily driver. But on the plus side, Focus continues to work with cyclists on improving Project Y.

Even though it isn’t finished, this looks like one of the most compelling eBike designs looking to come to the market. If you’ve got an eye for slick eBikes, this is one you’ll want to be on the lookout for.
