Tackling limited battery life a problem that just about every eBike on the market faces. While we’re seen some novel attempts to combat this issue in the past, none address the issue at scale. Enter Kvaern, an eBike that charges thanks to an integrated a solar-powered battery pack to bolster your riding times.
Based in Copenhagen, Kvaern is one of the more interesting new entries into the eBike market. The core concept behind the electric vehicle is pretty straight forward; revolving around a lightweight and feature-rich frame, the eBike pairs with an external solar charger and power pack to refuel without needing to plug in back at home. So anywhere you can tout the solar charging array, you can power up your ride.
Kvaern sports relatively typical design that packs all of the electronics into a barely-noticeable and stylish form-factor. There’s no information available just yet on how much the eBike will weigh, but you can most likely expect it to fall into the 30- to 40-pound range.
Specification-wise, Kvaern is on-par with many of the other eBikes we’ve looked at in the past. The pedal-assisted bike is powered by a 250W motor that is said to sport a top speed of over 15mph, which it can rev up to in just under 4 seconds. You can expect to have rides clock in with around a 31-mile range thanks to its built-in battery, which features an easily-changeable design.
The new solor-powered eBike will be coming to Indiegogo later in the week, so eager electric vehicle enthusiasts will be able to lock in the unique ride in the coming days. Kvaern launches with a starting price of $1,200 and if you’re looking to throw in for the battery and solar-charing array, you’re looking at dropping another $550. At the end of the day, that clocks in at under $1,800, a steep price for an eBike.
As of now, Kvaern is estimated to be shipping later this year in the fall. But all-in-all, the idea behind Kvaern is certainly a unique take and a glimpse into what the future of electric transportation may hold.
