Sony unveils God of War PS4 Pro w/ complete visual overhaul, pre-order now

Rumors and leaks regarding an upcoming PS4 bundle for the new God of War game have been all over the internet for the past month or more. Considering this is supposed to be the franchise’s return to glory, not to mention one of Sony’s most anticipated and beloved first party franchises, a special console bundle seemed imminent.

And to almost no one’s surprise, a little more than a month before the new game hits store shelves, Sony has now officially unveiled the new Limited Edition God of War PS4 Pro Bundle.

In stark contrast to the usual bundle with a standard console and a game thrown in, this PS4 Pro has undergone a complete aesthetic overhaul along with the included DualShock 4.

The Limited Edition God of War PS4 Pro Bundle comes with the 1TB console itself, a special edition DualShock 4 wireless controller, a physical copy of the new God of War and some digital, in-game goodies.

The real selling point here is the completely redesigned exterior of the console and controller. Sony tapped GOW developer, Santa Monica Studios, to aid in the design process. According to studio head Shannon Studstill, the design of the console is based directly from Kratos’ new iconic Leviathan Axe weapon from the game. The top face of the console is essentially a combination of the in-game Axe skill tree and the rune slots found on the Leviathan Axe’s handle:

The top surface is the Axe skill tree you’ll use in-game to upgrade your axe, along with the runic gem slots on the handle that enable unique special attacks.

Along the sides of the console, the 3-tone grey design is accented by gold stripes and logos along with a “beautiful Norse design” and runes that “each represent a realm in the game.”

The appropriately named Leviathan Gray DualShock 4 wireless controller features an almost silvery finish with a darker grey on the triggers and backside. It features the “Huldra Brothers brand” on the right side (much like Kratos’ Leviathan Axe in-game) as well as a subtle God of War logo across the touchpad.

While I’m not personally in love with the design here, I do appreciate the Norse vibe and color palette, even if it doesn’t really capture the overall feel of the game for me. Long time fans of the series and collectors will likely want to give it a look and it’s only right that one of Sony’s most popular franchises gets the limited edition treatment.

The new God of War releases on April 20th for $59.99 (Prime pre-order for $47.99), alongside the new Limited Edition God of War PS4 Pro Bundle for $399.99 shipped. The console bundle is already up for pre-order at Amazon.
