Activision unveils Call of Duty Black Ops 4, set for release in October [Video]

Rumors have been swirling around the internet for quite some time regarding what this year’s entry in the Call of Duty series would look like. Now, publisher Activision has finally announced some early details on Call of Duty: Black Ops 4.

Original rumors regarding the game suggested we would be seeing a more grounded approach than we saw with Black Ops 3. Those details seemed to hit the mark considering the somewhat negative response to 2016’s futuristic Infinite Warfare. The series returned to its roots in 2017’s Call of Duty: WWII and with the game going on to be the best-selling title in the US for that year, something more “grounded’ sounded like a smart approach.

With Activision’s triple rotation of development houses that are constantly working on future iterations of the game, it was easy to see Treyarch was up next and, in-turn, that we would be seeing the next Black Ops (or something like it).

Well, it looks like Eurogamer and those early sources were right on the money as Activision officially announced Treyarch’s Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 this morning. It will indeed be a more grounded experience, but beyond that we have no direct details.

Here’s a quick teaser trailer from Activision’s Twitter:

While Activision continues to support Black Ops 3 with a new update coming this week, we now know this year’s Call of Duty will launch on October 12th, in its regular release window.

As usual, the game will be coming to PS4, Xbox One and PC, but if early leaks are any indication, the game will also come to Nintendo Switch. While nothing is officially confirmed for Nintendo’s hybrid machine, industry insiders have suggested it will support DLC, HD rumble and motion controls.

Call of Duty Black Ops 4 is already up for pre-order on Amazon at $60, or $47.99 for Prime members. We’ll find out more details on May 17th in the Community Reveal Event.
