Guacamelee! 2 set for release this summer + new details from GDC 2018 [Video]

Guacamelee’s interesting blend of Mexican folklore, humor and action packed gameplay garnered it critical praise as one of the best indie releases of the year. While that was way back in 2013, a sequel has been in the works for quite some time now. After the debut announcement trailer hit YouTube back in October of last year (see below), we now have an official release window and more details from the game’s appearance at GDC 2018.

The Mexican wrestling meets side scrolling beat’em up action of the original game is back in full force in the sequel. The game will continue the story of the first title while expanding upon its action-based gameplay, unique abilities, 4-player co-op and additional player characters.

The blue chicken character has a new Sonic-like homing charge ability and main character, Juan Aguacate, will be able to make use of the new Eagle Hook item, for example. Just like it sounds, you’ll be able to avoid damage and reach all new heights with Juan’s new grappling abilities.

Seven years after defeating Carlos Calaca, Juan Aguacate is forced to don his luchador mask again to face a new threat — this time to the very fabric of space and time. Punch your way through a whole new Metroid-vania style world and try to save the Mexiverse!

The Metroid-vania approach is especially interesting here. This essentially means new abilities will allow for more parts of the large side-scrolling game world to become available to you as you progress through the game.

As for the story, Guacamelee! 2 takes place some seven years after the events of the first game. Juan has settled down with his wife and children only to be disturbed by an evil foe looking to destroy Mexico and the entire time space continuum itself. Clearly Juan isn’t going to sit idly by and let this happen, so it’s back to the luchador mask and fighting the forces of evil.

Better yet, you won’t have to wait much longer to get your hands on it. It sounds like Guacamelee! 2 is scheduled to arrive on PlayStation 4 this summer.

For now, developer DrinkBox Studios is yet to confirm other platforms. Sony has supported the studio and its IP from day one, so clearly the team is focusing first on that platform, but there is a possibility we see Juan Aguacate’s second adventure hit the PC, Xbox One and even Nintendo Switch at some point.
