Amazon Key goes nationwide as five new compatible smart locks are announced

Some six months ago, Amazon unveiled its Key system that is designed to make deliveries easier and more secure. But the idea of allowing UPS entry into your home has been met with some resistance. Today, Amazon is introducing a handful of new features and compatibility with eight total locks that are now on the market. Add in expanded availability for this service now totaling 37 cities, and Amazon Key is ready for the big-time.

In case you’re not familiar with Amazon’s Key service, here’s a quick breakdown. Combining a Cloud Cam, smart lock and Amazon’s Key app allows you to give delivery services, cleaning services and more access to your home at the press of a button. Amazon is pushing this as the next wave of the future for in-home deliveries.

The idea is that your UPS or FedEx delivery will be more secure within your home than outside the front door. To solve this issue, Amazon is leveraging its Key service as a way to ensure safe delivery of items while still making certain that your home is safe during and after use.

Along with today’s news that Amazon Key is expanding to new markets, the online giant is also announcing new partnerships with Yale and Kwikset. Bringing the total number of compatible locks to eight, the manufacturers are unveiling three and two models respectively. These locks feature the usual keyless entry design that can be activated via your smartphone or Amazon’s Key service.

Those interested in jumping on Amazon Key will want to take advantage of the current sale running at this time. The entry-level bundle starts at $169.99, which is down from the usual $290 price tag. You can save up to an additional $140 by adding one of the new compatible locks that was announced today. Full details can be found on this landing page.

While I’m all for early adoption of new technologies, I’m not quite sure that my home is ready for Amazon Key. I appreciate the extra steps taken to ensure safety all around here, but the reality is that there’s still a large amount of trust required between you and a delivery person. Amazon’s Cloud Cam is included to record any potential issues, but it’s not a deterrent if a delivery person really wanted to go rogue.
