Acer’s gaming-focused Predator Helios 500 laptop is a force to be reckoned with

Acer revealed its powerful Predator Helios 500 Notebook yesterday. It is aimed directly at gamers with configuration options that are sure to provide incredible performance in a portable computer. Its large 17.3-inch display rocks 4K resolution, or 1080p if the users prefer an incredible 144Hz refresh rate (a nice touch that gives gamers an edge against their competition).

Acer held its next@acer Global Press Conference in New York yesterday where the company announced many interesting and competitive products. Some of the key announcements include Chromebooks that go head-to-head with Google’s Pixelbook, the all-metal Swift 3 Windows 10 laptop, and the Nitro series of gaming desktops and monitors.

Also in the announcement was the company’s new Predator Helios 500. A show-stopping gaming notebook with a standout design and long list of features. As mentioned earlier, it packs a 4K display that users can configure to be powered by either AMD or NVIDIA graphics. Pair that with either the latest Intel or AMD CPUs and you have a laptop that is likely one of the most powerful in existence.

Acer touts that GPU options of NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 or AMD Radeon RX Vega56. Both options are very powerful, but if you are looking for a bit more juice, the GTX 1070 is actually overclockable.

CPU options reach as high as Intel’s 8th Gen Core i9-8950HK1 or AMD’s Ryzen 7 2700. The Intel processor has a 2.9 GHz base clock and 4.8 GHz boost clock. If you do not understand those numbers, suffice it to say, it is fast.

“We’ve expanded our Predator Helios gaming notebook line in response to popular demand from gamers seeking extreme performance on the go,” said Jerry Kao, President of IT Products Business, Acer Inc. “The Predator Helios 500 and Helios 300 gaming notebooks feature Acer’s proprietary thermal technologies and powerful components that, coupled with our award-winning software, deliver unparalleled gaming experiences.”

The Helios 500 comes with 16GBs of DDR4 memory, but is configurable to a jaw dropping 64GB. Plenty of memory for you to throw virtually anything at and even if you try to max it out, you know it probably will not even break a sweat.

While this notebook is in a portable form-factor, it is quite capable of being your desktop. It has the ports and power to drive three external monitors and is also VR-ready. Acer’s AeroBlade 3D metal fans paired with five cool-air distributing heat pipes should keep temperature in-check for you so you do not have to give it a second-thought.

The Acer Predator Helios 500 Notebook will be available in June starting and will be priced at $1,999.
