Nintendo unveils New Hylian Shield Edition 2DS XL, available for pre-order now

Pre-order

While industry analysts have suggested that Nintendo’s insanely popular hybrid Switch console has already started to cannibalize the company’s handheld sales, that hasn’t stopped it from dropping a few more special edition 2DS consoles. The Pikachu and Poké Ball Edition machines come to mind. While we just reported on the new, mobile-focused Nintendo Switch bundle releasing in Japan, a brand new Zelda inspired 2DS XL is also coming down the pipeline this summer.

Nintendo’s Japan-only (for now anyway) mobile-focused Switch bundle pointed at the company’s push towards the Switch becoming one of the go-to mobile machines in the east despite the popularity of the 2DS and 3DS over there. But it now appears as though Nintendo won’t be giving up so easily on what was once (and still is in many ways) the best mobile gaming platform on the planet.

Today, the official Nintendo of America Twitter account announced the New Nintendo 2DS XL Hylian Shield Edition set for release this summer. As the name suggests, the small clam shell handheld will be adorned with Link’s iconic Hylian Shield. The 3D design pops with accents of gold, red and silver on a sea of blue.

The New Nintendo 2DS XL Hylian Shield Edition will come pre-loaded with one of the best Zelda titles on mobile in The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds. It originally released back in 2013 as the 3DS sequel to the legendary Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. Those are some seriously large shoes to fill, but a 91/100 meta review score shows Nintendo did a pretty good job at that.

The New Nintendo 2DS XL originally released back in the summer of last year featuring just about all of the enhancements the New 3DS XL received. That includes built-in amiibo support, more horsepower, additional shoulder buttons and the must-have C-stick (extra joystick perfect for camera control). If you’re going to get a 2DS or a 3DS, you’re more than likely going to want a New 2DS/3DS XL for these very reasons.

Nintendo’s New Nintendo 2DS XL Hylian Shield Edition will be releasing on June 2nd for $159.99 shipped. This is a GameStop exclusive by the looks of it and pre-order listings are already live.

This news comes on the heels of Sony’s massive Days of Play promotion which kicks off a few days after the new Hylian Shield Edition releases. It has huge price drops on PS4 Pro as well as the brand new Limited Edition Days of Play PS4.
