Essential tools for new homeowners from $17

I think back to when I was growing up, and my Dad knew how to fix everything. I feel like there was a home repair class I was supposed to take but never got information about. I was talking to my Dad recently about this, and he had two things to say:

  1. It’s easier to be clueless because of how easy it is to hire someone for a small job.
  2. It’s never been easier to learn because of YouTube.

In fact, I had an issue with my refrigerator earlier this year, and we were able to fix it with a with a quick trip to a repair shop and a YouTube video.

Nevertheless, you can’t repair things without the right tools. I’ve been a homeowner for the past eleven years, so I’ve acquired some tools since then. I wanted to run down what I believe are the essential tools for new homeowners.

DEWALT 20V Max Lithium-Ion Brushless Compact Drill Driver – $99

A great drill is the absolute first tool anyone needs in their tool belt. I’ve used a number of them over the years, and DEWALT is my favorite. The battery lasts forever, and the drill is extremely powerful. Don’t forget to add on the drill bits as well.

IRWIN Tools VISE-GRIP 3-Piece Set – $38

A great set of locking pliers is a handy thing to own. If you need to tighten, clamp, or twist something challenging, the alloy steel frames will make the job a lot easier. I bought this set years ago, and I use it often.

Kobalt Locking Pliers – $29

While locking pliers seem similar to the VISE-GRIPS above, they end up being used in different circumstances. This kit includes a 7“ and a 10” model. They come in handy for quickly cutting wires, loosening bolts, etc.

Stanley Screw Driver Set – $17

Any essential tools list wouldn’t be complete without a set of screwdrivers. I’ve owned a set of Stanley ones for many years, and they’ve always served me well. This kit includes multiple flat and Phillips head options. They have diamond tips of maximum strength.

DEWALT Orbit Sander – $70

My sander is my most recent tool purchase, but I’ve used it multiple times since then. If you are refinishing cabinets, trying to take off old paint from doors, or trying to shave an inch or so from something, the DEWALT Orbit Sander is my go-to pick. Don’t forget to pick up extra sanding pads as well.

Wrap Up

These tools are some of my most used. Do you have any you’d like to add? Drop a note in the comments, and I will keep this post updated.
