Nintendo’s new Labo Vehicle Kit puts you in the driver’s seat of a car, plane & submarine

Nintendo kicked off 2018 with its surprising new line of Labo cardboard construction sets geared towards letting Switch owners build their own accessories and teaching them how to code at the same time. At launch only two kits were available, but now Nintendo has debuted its third addition to the series of Labo kits, this time centered around various vehicles. Hit the jump for the full scoop.

The third offering in Nintendo’s lineup of do-it-yourself kits enters in the form of an assortment of controls for various vehicles. Today’s release isn’t out of nowhere, as Nintendo has recently shown interest in expanding Labo’s functionality with the company bringing integration to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe in one of its latest updates.

The new kit is more in line with the Variety Kit than the Labo Robot Kit, given that you’ll be able to assemble and play with a few different creations rather than one main one. Nintendo’s Labo Vehicle Kit puts you in the driver’s seat of a car, plane, and submarine thanks to three new Toy-Con creations. There’s an acceleration pedal that works with all three of the vehicle controls to expand upon their functionality.

Just like the previous two releases, the Vehicle Kit will come paired with its own game that doubles as the instructions. Nintendo is looking to switch things up though and is changing the game’s interface from a straightforward arcade-style interaction in favor a more open system.

Gamers will be able to fly around a new virtual island, swapping between their vehicles to complete challenges and more. From the teaser trailer, it looks like this time around you’ll be able to play mini games like kart racing and target practice alongside some other activities.

Unlike the motorbike Labo build which allows you to rest your Switch right between the build-on cardboard dock, all of the new constructions are meant to complement the console while it’s playing on the big screen. This looks to be in an effort to make the kits more immersive by taking advantage of your TV over the Switch’s relatively puny screen.

Nintendo’s latest DIY kit for the Switch is slated to hit store shelves later this year on September 14th. It will sell for $69.99, putting it right in line with the other kits that Nintendo released earlier this year. Given how impressed I was with Labo the first time around, I am super excited to get my hands on the latest.

Nintendo’s Labo Vehicle Kit is now available for preorder at Amazon and Best Buy for $69.99 shipped.

The Vehicle Kit makes perfect sense in the scope of Nintendo’s overall lineup, and in my book, was the most logical kit to expand upon the Labo releases. While we may be hoping for Breath of the Wild or Splatoon 2 tie-ins for the cardboard kits, it’s great to see Nintendo stand by their commitment to continue supporting its STEM-focused initiative.
