Sony’s new 4K TVs feature ‘its Pinnacle of Picture Quality’ and Netflix Calibrated Mode

Just when you think you have the TV situation figured out in your home, Sony has announced four new UHDTVs that all pack quite a punch. The company wasn’t shy about this release, touting that the new sets were developed with the focus of bringing its ‘long history and expertise developing professional cameras and monitors’ to televisions. Aside from brand, these sets stand out from the competition with features like a Netflix Calibrated Mode, compatibility with CalMAN’s professional-grade display calibration software, a built-in 3.2 channel sound system, and more. With the name MASTER Series, Sony paints a very clear picture that it plans for this tech to lead the charge in its TV product line-up.

Sony brought its first 4K television, the BRAVIA X900, to market back in 2012. With the last six years of experience, the company has spent its time developing a series of proprietary technologies that have led up to today’s announcement.

One of those technologies is a successor to the company’s current X1 Extreme processor that is Sony’s ZD9, A1, and AF8 sets. The new chip is called the X1 Ultimate and it is reserved specifically for the A9F and Z9F televisions announced today. The chip is powerful enough to ‘detect and analyze each object in the picture’ and ensure high color accuracy and detail.

Additionally, the new tech packs a Netflix Calibrated Mode. As the name implies, this is Netflix-only and reproduces more accurate visuals with the intention of bringing Netflix’s TV series, films, documentaries, etc. an elevated amount of realism.

“Netflix is redefining the way in which content is produced, and together we have created an offering that has never been done before”, said Mike Fasulo, president and chief operating officer, Sony Electronics North America. “Our new line of TVs featuring Netflix Calibrated Mode truly optimize the entertainment experience and provide new viewing options for our customers.”

A new Acoustic Surface Audio+ feature is specific to the A9F series. It offers what Sony calls “top-of-the-line sound quality” thanks to an integrated 3.2 channel sound system. This is accomplished via three actuators paired with two subwoofers.

All sets run Android TV and pack built-in microphones for communicating with the Google Assistant, allowing users to find the TV show or movie that they want to watch by simply using their voice.

While Sony has not yet announced pricing or availability, you can expect the company’s latest offerings to set you back quite a bit. With some of its readily available TV’s fetching $10,000, it’s not hard to do the math on this one.
