Originally released back in April, the reboot of God of War was certainly a highly anticipated title ahead of its launch. But we’re not sure anyone expected something this incredible. Widely regarded as one of the best PlayStation exclusives ever released and most definitely the biggest of the year, God of War squashed expectations with its incredible visuals, seamless cinematic approach, memorable characters and a somewhat drastic move to over-the-shoulder third person combat. The game is triumphant on just about every measure and is about to get even better at the end of the month.
After moving from Greek mythology over to that of a Norse influence, no one thought the new God of War was going to be bad, but it was hard to tell if such a leap would be capable of carrying core fans along for the ride. With a string of near perfect reviews on the board, it’s time to take a look at the New Game+ options coming in a few weeks time.
Developer Sony Santa Monica recently took to the official God of War blog to outline the New Game+ mode which will include a host of new weapons/items/gear, increasingly difficult enemies and cinematic skipping, among other things for those that have already finished the story once.
More specifically, you’ll be able to run through the adventure again with all of your previous armor, enchantments, talismans, resources and more. Obviously you’ll also be able to do that on any difficulty setting of your choosing. The higher level enemies aren’t just more difficult, according to Sony Santa Monica, they will also have “a few new tricks up their sleeves!”
Possibly the most interesting of the additions is “Skap Slag”. This is a new resource to collect that will allow players to upgrade gear to an even higher level at certain Blacksmiths. In other words, there is a whole new level of rare equipment to craft and upgrade in the New Game+ mode.
Lastly, once a full play through has been completed, you’ll be able to skip the cinematic portions of the game on both normal and New Game+ modes.
The God of War New Game+ mode is a completely free update in celebration of the game’s 4-month anniversary. It will be made available on August 20th via the usual channels. If for some reason you haven’t given this one a go yet, you still have a couple of weeks to complete your first play through in order to take advantage of the New Game+ content.
