Blue announces the Yeti Nano, a compact version of its best-selling Yeti USB microphone

If you’ve watched tech YouTubers at all, or tried to be one yourself, you’re likely aware of the Blue Yeti microphone. It’s become the go-to when it comes to voiceovers, and that’s because of price and quality when it comes to audio.

I’ve owned a Yeti for years, and it’s always the first thing I grab when going on a trip or when I need something quick for podcasting or voice recording. The only downside to the Yeti, however, has been its size. That all changes with the just released Yeti Nano.

The Yeti Nano is very similar to the full-sized Yeti, but with some key differences. You’ll see the familiar style of the Yeti but in a much smaller package. The Yeti Nano features both cardioid and omnidirectional patterns but lacks the bidirectional and stereo options the larger Yeti carries.

Gone is the knob to change your pattern on the back, as well as the physical gain adjustment on the Yeti Nano. Blue opted for a pushbutton offering to change your pattern, and the gain is actually adjusted by a companion application that runs on your Mac or PC. This is both a blessing and a curse, in my opinion. I loved being able to change my gain on the fly while recording should I need to, but getting fine adjustments was never easy to do and I was always over or undercorrecting. This solves the latter problem, but also means you have to launch a companion application in order to change your gain, which removes the convenience factor.

The Yeti Nano is capable of high-quality 24-bit/48kHz recordings, so you’ll still have that crystal clear audio you’re used to. The stand is also brand-new to the Yeti Nano, though it somewhat resembles its older brother.

On the front of the Yet Nano, you’ll also notice the slightly refined headphone knob. Now it’s an infinite scrolling wheel with a pushbutton built in, compared to the separate volume knob and mute button on the Yeti.

The bottom of the Yeti Nano was also overhauled. Before, there was a 5/8-11 screw on the bottom of the Yeti, however that’s been replaced by a much more convenient 1/4-20 thread. This means you can directly mount the Yeti Nano to a regular boom arm, mini tripod, or even a GorillaPod if you’re on-the-go.

You’ll also notice that the USB plug has changed from miniUSB to the more common microUSB. This should alleviate any issues that you might have had with finding an ancient plug around the house now that it uses a more commonplace one. USB-C would have been better here. Maybe the Yeti 2.0?

I’ve used the Yeti Nano for Skype and voice calls with great success so far, and plan to use it in upcoming videos and voiceovers that I do. Overall, this is a great successor to the Yeti and should become a go-to in any YouTuber’s toolbox due to its size and increased convenience.

The Yeti Nano is expected to be available in four color choices including Shadow Grey (pictured), Vivid Blue, Red Onyx, and Cubano Gold. It will retail for $99.99. You can purchase the Yeti Nano in Shadow Grey from authorized Blue retailers or at Blue’s own website.
