This morning Amazon has announced the latest generation of its popular Fire HD 8 tablet that features always-on access to Alexa. As its name suggests, it keeps the same eight-inch HD display that sports over one-million pixels that’s powered by a quad-core processor. A camera upgrade is one of the most notable new features we’re seeing today. Amazon is also making a handful of improvements under the hood, although battery life has taken a step backwards on today’s release. More below.
Amazon’s Fire HD 8 has always been one of its most popular tablets largely thanks to an $80 price tag. During the holidays it tends to drop to the $50 range, making it an easy purchase for kids or those that do not need the extra tech found in an iPad. The price tag will remain the same on today’s upgraded model, as it’s sure to drop back to its $50 price tag come November.
Inside, you’ll find the same 1.3GHz processor that the previous generation sported along with 1.5GB of RAM. There’s the option for 16GB or 32GB of internal storage, but you can bump it up to 400GB with the inclusion of a microSD card. The battery is taking a hit, dropping from the previous generation’s 12-hour spec to 10 this time around. That’s largely due to the inclusion of the always-on Alexa capability. We’d venture to guess that most would prefer to ditch this capability in favor of longer battery life.
Amazon will offer its latest Fire HD tablet in a selection of four colors, with the Kids edition (also announced today) coming in three different casing options. Much like previous releases, the kids-focused version will ship with a two-year guarantee and one-year of Amazon’s Freetime Unlimited. Prices start at $80 for the 16GB model or you can upgrade to 32GB of storage for $110. Amazon is upcharging on the Kids’ Edition at $130. The Fire HD 8 is available for pre-order today and is slated to ship on October 4th.
